openSUSE 12.3

Although the release of 12.2 has been delayed I see that 12.3 is rolling merrily along

dale@linux:~/Kernel> cat /etc/SuSE-release
openSUSE 12.3 Milestone 0 (x86_64)
VERSION = 12.3
CODENAME = Mantis

> VERSION = 12.3

should i assume you do (or not) know why yours says 12.3?
and, should we guess you are asking why, or not?

or, perhaps this was aimed at chit-chat?

IMO, it is a bit early, but as some point factory 12.2 gets its own branch (RC2?) and factory
gets renamed to 12.3.

Cheers / Saludos,

The split between Factory and 12.2 happened at 12.2 Beta2. Since then, only
selected factory updates have been propagated into 12.2.

Yes saw that this afternoon when I did a update from factory. Seems strange to be running 12.3 (M 0) before 12.2 is released or even finished.

Historically factory gets populated shortly after a release with milesone0. openSUSE 12.2 was delayed from July to August so I guess this puts the 12.3 release back on schedule
I just thought it was interesting. And it explains why my update to openSUSE 12.2 rc1 looked like a downdaterotfl!

This is true, but how? I have the update too! :slight_smile: I saw a huge software update, around 1GB, but never thought it was gonna be 12.3!

12.2 is no longer in factory, it branched out last week when RC1 was
released…12.2 is currently in the 12.2 repos

factory continued moving forward and (as all who have dipped into
factory lately know) is today containing PRE-milestone 1 level code for
openSUSE 12.3…

so, if you dup factory you catch 12.3

if you dup 12.2 you get 12.2, but probably NOT 12.2 RC1…

because 12.2 code base is still moving toward final release–bugs ARE
being killed…so if you dup 12.2 you will suck in code which is not part
of 12.2 RC1(which was frozen and downloadable from this page:
http://software.opensuse.org/developer/)

This is from my openSUSE 12.2 /etc/SuSE–release

openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64)
VERSION = 12.2
CODENAME = Mantis

I did a clean install of openSUSE 12.2 rc1 but I update almost daily.
On another partition I do have factory ie open suse 12.3 which I also update almost daily. been doing this for a few years now.
