Apologies for being so dumb and stupid enough that by posting my issues I would expect help - I am not (as you have gathered by now) the most intelligent and certainly not clued up on Linux nearly enough (for what is a 3rd party application).

Yes, UNIX® is, from an administrator’s point of view, different to VAX/VMS, MVS, CDC, ICL, Honywell, Unisys and anything else which can be classified as being a “multiple concurrent user computer
” … - Please note that, a “Personal Computer
” does not, by definition, support multiple concurrent users – usually – there is an exception – Linux …
So, yes, Linux, and everything else that looks or smells like UNIX®, is, from and administrator’s point-of-view, different to almost everything else that was and is a Mainframe Computer and, very different to a large percentage of the Personal Computers.
But, when, the «multiple concurrent users» difference between the “market leader” and the “rest of the computing world” has been understood, you should be excellently placed to come to grips with the machines which aren’t really “Personal Computers” …
