Hi! I use the official Mozilla deb repo on my Debian machine, and the other day I realised about this interesting tab group feature, tho I can’t seem to be able to use it on my Tumbleweed system.
Why? Is there a way I can get the feature working?

(wow … so the Firefox dev team finally decided to add a feature that has existed in other browsers for years?? )
Thoughts aside, it’s quite easy.
One way: select a Tab, right-click, select the Add option … see first screenshot
Another way: select a Tab. Then hold Shift key and click on a second Tab - continue to do so if you want to multi-select other tabs for a group. Then right click and select the Add option … see second screenshot. Notice the two Tabs selected are highlighted.
.
Maybe I wasn’t clear in my post. I do know how to use that feature. I’ve been using it for weeks on my Debian system. The options that you show are simply not shown for me. That’s my problem.
Works fine here. Right click on a Tab and I see the same.
Might check this:
Open new tab
Execute this URL: about:config
Accept usage
In the search box, type “groups”
Look for: browser.tabs.groups.enabled
Ensure it is “true”
Check for any other “tab group” options are enabled, if you want the feature
Welp, yeah, that was it!
I wonder, why would I have it off? I never touched that setting,
How are your browser.tabs.groups
options looking? Mine look like this:
field | value |
---|---|
browser.tabs.groups.enabled | false |
browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled | false |
browser.tabs.groups.smart.optin | false |
browser.tabs.groups.smart.userEnabled | true |
Mabe leftover old conguration ie pre group usage
Hmm. This is a new feature, so hasn’t been lingering for any length of time - It would be odd to add the anticipated config settings, without the functionality (my thinking, as a retired software engineer).
To quote from Mozilla site.
“Starting in Firefox version 137, you can use tab groups to manage open tabs in Firefox by grouping them together and labelling them. All users should expect to see the feature by May 6, 2025.”
