Odd sound card issue.

I recently installed 15.2 KDE to a new Intel J4125 (Gemini Lake renewed) processor computer. Things seemed to be working fine until I stopped having sound. Looking at the KDE audio settings I noticed that for some reason it had switched playback devices to Analog stereo which meant that my HDMI connected monitor with speakers had no output. Selecting the Built in HDMI output caused the sound to start working again. This particular thing happened again (seems to happen during idle times) so it got me to check in Yast on the sound card. In there it said it was not configured so I attempted to configure it. I get back a message about conflicts and that snd-soc-skl is a problem. After that the system says there is no sound card. Sound is lost to my user until I reboot. But once rebooted sound works fine until it decides I am wanting Analog output.

The other oddity is although my user has a functioning audio (with the quirk) if I log in as root there is no sound card to play sound with.

Tried a few things I found with net searches but to no avail. This is a fairly recent Intel processor and I am not sure if that has something to do with it. I also note that my wireless does not work (not a big problem since I use a ethernet connection).

Anyone encounter this and know a solution?

Try setting the default sound card in pavucontrol.

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/53631/set-default-sound-card-in-pulse-audio

Specifically, set the desired profile in the Configuration tab, then in the ‘Output Devices’ tab set the pertinent output device as default.

Thanks for the reply. There is no configuration tab or area under pauvcontrol. The check block for Output device does not seem to do anything when clicked to select the HDMI/Display port (plugged in) digital audio “set as fallback”. I click it and it just remains as a checkmark. Same in the input section tab. I guess I have to see if the quirk of going to Analog Stereo happens again. Interesting idea though.

Still does not explain why Yast can not configure the sound card. but I guess it doesn’t matter if the sound plays in my user account.

The ‘Configuration’ (right-hand) tab should be available. Are you sure you actually launched the PulseAudio Volume Control GUI?

There is really nothing to configure (from an ALSA driver perspective). The relevant sound modules are loaded automatically at boot.

I had the same issue repeat after being away from the computer for a bit. It changed to Analog stereo again.

I did find the configuration tab when I searched a bit more with the GUI full window instead of opening size.

Regarding posting the results of pacmd list it is awful large:

I might have missed the end of that but having to break it up to get it to fit the Forum size rules.

Lengthy output is best copied to https://pastebin.com/ or https://paste.opensuse.org/ and just share the link here.

Filter the output like this…

pacmd list |egrep "output|active"

Here’s the filtered output

Ok, that reports that the HDMI output is active

**active** port: <hdmi-**output**-0>

and the active profile is set as expected

You could try setting the default sink like this…

pactl set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_0e.0.hdmi-stereo.monitor

Gave it a whirl but got this results:

matt@localhost:~> pactl set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000
_00_0e.0.hdmi-stereo.monitor
Failure: No such entity
matt@localhost:~>

I guess since no one else has chimed in I will just have to put up with the darn thing. Sure is odd that it happens only occasionally after the system is idle.
