Hi everyone! I’ve been having a bit of a weird issue recently.
I ran Leap for a long time before finally switching to Tumbleweed a few weeks ago. Ever since that switch, I’ve run into an issue 2 or 3 times where my PC freezes on the login screen. I’ll sit down and wake up the computer, and it freezes, but only partially. I can still use the mouse and the TTY interface opens easily. But I wasn’t exactly sure what I should even try running there (restarting plasma shell didn’t do anything), so I’ve just run sudo reboot.
From there, my PC reboots, but it takes an abnormally long time. Maybe it’s due to fixing a crash or something, but instead of loading in 10-30 seconds, it normally takes 2-5 minutes before getting to the boot loader, at which point everything acts normal.
I’ve only had this happen to me a few times so it’s not a huge deal, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue/knows potential solutions? I’m using KDE with X11, if it means anything. I’d at least like some potential ways to unfreeze it/things to restart so I don’t have to sit through an abnormally long boot next time it happens.
Hey, just had this happen to me again and I figured I’d give an update. I’ve switched to Wayland since then and the issue is still happening.
From the TTY, I ended up running a few commands, most of which didn’t work except for “sudo systemctl restart sddm”. This command brought me back to the loading, but eventually it hung and gave me an error in a very basic text box in the corner of my screen: “StartKDE: Could not start plasma session.”
I ran out of things to try off the top of my head, and ended up running sudo reboot. This time, though? It booted scarily fast. I believe when I was rebooting before, the system was struggling to do something with the session/shell, whether that being resetting it or shutting it down, so it just stuck loading until it hung and the system restarted. This time, since the shell (or whatever is causing this error) was already closed, it just instantly restarted.
Afterwards, it’s worked just fine. I’m open to any other suggestions. I never did get around to trying it on another kernel just because it would take a little work, and the issue is unpredictable as well so I’d never be entirely sure if it was actually gone for a few weeks. Not sure if it’s some some sort of KDE issue or what, but I never had this happen when I ran Leap for a few years, so it’s strange that it’s happening within just weeks on Tumbleweed.
