Nvidia gives a black screen

I have severe problems in getting anything other than a blank screen when booting OpenSuSE Leap 15.2 with the nvidia drivers.
It is not the hardware, because I have a multiboot system and Kubuntu just works fine with nvidia.
My card is:

NVIDIA Corporation GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 3GB] (rev a1)

The repo is this one:

https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/15.2

Here the install log:

A reboot after installation faces me with a blank screen (‘no signal’, it complains).

When rebooting with ‘nomodeset 3’ and removing the nvidia modules, I get a messages about pubkeys and MOK.
This would make me think that my Z370-A PRO Mobo is booting in the secure mode and the problem arises from there.
However, it is not because the system does not boot in secure mode.
The only way to configure the system to boot in secure mode is by enabling Windows 10 WHQL Support (normally disabled).
And even when enabling it, I still find that secure boot support is disabled.

The problem popped up one evening when updating nvidia. But what causes it I cannot guess.

Please post:

ls -al /etc/X11/

Also post on a paste.opensuse.org:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

With no nvidia modules:

ls -al /etc/X11/ gives:

In my previous post I mentioned nvidia module but I meant to say nvidia rpm.

Install the nvidia drivers:

zypper in x11-video-nvidiaG05

That should install all 4 rpms.

Reboot

That certainly will install the rpms. Have done that and so far, the reboot will always result in a blank screen.

Hi Ed
Can you confirm secure boot is disabled, when you boot from the system can you press the required key to get to the system boot menu and select the efi file to boot from? If so select the grubx64.efi file not shim.efi. If not if you boot to run level 3 (multi-user.target) and show the output from;

efibootmgr -v

Oh, and I’m guessing power supply is ok for the card (400Wmin and 120W for the card) and you have connected the 6-pin power plug to the card?

A have a dual boot system. Ubuntu has no problems with using the nvidia drivers, them being the 440. Not the 450, like on OpenSuSE.

Hi
Then check booting is in non-secure mode… I prefer the hardway here (current nvidia driver 455.23.04).

typing

efibootmgr -v

 gave this:

Hi Ed
Ok so it is booting in non-secure, Ub* is booting in secure mode…

At the black screen can you press ctrl+alt+F2 and get to a tty login?

No. The system does not react to this key press when i have booted with the 4 nvidia rpms installed and received a black screen.
shortly after boot the monitors tells is gets no signal anymore.

Hi Ed
OK, so if you (at grub) press e to edit and on the linuxefi line add nomodeset at the end and boot. I’m guessing the screen comes up, maybe at low resolution? The G05 drivers are the ones installed? Maybe an issue with the building of those rpms… Can you try the G04 driver and see if that works?

Is cooler moving ?
If yes - its a problem with 12V connector If no - Its a whole power system problem

The G04 drivers give a clean boot and the screen comes up.
But they are not meant for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 card I have. Playing the (wine) game Elite Dangerous makes the program crash.

And the nomodeset’ at the end of the boot line (when G05 drivers are installed) leads to a blank screen.

Hi
I suspect secure boot vs no secure boot with the G05. See herein the secure boot section: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA

But my machine is not securely booted, is it? You said so in your post at 22.05 yesterday
Anyway, installing the NVIDIA drivers the hard way works, when using 440.100 (it does not work wit 450.66).
Now I have been doing the hard way for ages and it it is a way to get things done.

Hi
Yes, (just check again with the efibootmgr command), I would try the import or disable validation. Maybe something is still lurking.

I install the hard way here… no issues seen with either Leap or Tumbleweed.
