Just as a heads up, we had an issue with the user database today that affected logins for all of the Novell and SUSE sites, including forums. The issue lasted about an hour, during which it was not possible to authenticate. This did not affect public users or those who were already authenticated.
The admins for the database are still looking into the root cause. Sorry about the inconvenience.
We had another smaller version of it about an hour ago. There are still some syncing/replication issues from what I’m told, so it could continue to happen intermittently throughout the afternoon. The admin is working on getting it stable.
is the outage in any way related to performance hit the forums have taken this evening (my time)?
For the past couple of hours performance has reverted to old.
Trying to login in Chrome I got - server took too long to respond - message.
When tried to log in again got a very simple message - server error.
Some pages I tried to load got the message - invalid page

wow…that is a shame…i guess i got too happy about everything being
smooth, i thought finally we had turned that corner…
well, pat Matt on the back for the smooth days, and encourage him to
keep trying…we are all pulling for him, you, Jim and all else who are
trying to provide success…

I should mention that I was in bugzilla a lot this afternoon for work-
related tasks and at least this afternoon, it didn’t seem to be having
any issues. (Of course, I’m talking afternoon local time for me, which
is Utah).
As you know, we had a pretty rough weekend and Monday. However, I think we are pretty stable now. I am not aware of any outages since Monday morning, although logins may still be a little slow.
I have been working closely with the directory administrator on the issue. We have found that once a day, some process is touching all the users and therefore causing the synchronization to be horribly backed up. We think that we have identified the process doing this, and I turned it off. We will see tonight if this has worked. It’s possible that we may take one more outage for a few minutes for a server move, but I don’t think it will be necessary.
For those looking who want to look at the bright side, there is some good that is coming of this. The fact that our user directory is huge and is mostly filled with junk (spam accounts, etc.) has not helped with the synchronization issues. This has put a lot of priority on the task of cleaning out the spam accounts and putting in a more aggressive process for keeping those accounts from being created in the first place. In the long run, I think this will be good for the forums.

which is one of the reasons why some of us think that, although having
the same login as for bugzilla is convenient, maybe the forums should
have a different login database or whatever.

Welcome
I’m aware that you think differently and you have your reasons, so I’m
not trying to push; I’m just expressing an opinion (without internal
knowledge).

Which is why I simply thanked you. No need to rehash an old
discussion.

Well, he does know, because we’ve discussed it in the past.
