  1. Have you investigated the openSUSE Audio Troubleshooting Guide yet? You may need to share more complete diagnostic info via the alsa-info.sh diagnostic script mentioned in the guide. You can share the URL that it provides here for others to review further

  2. Do either of these commands produce audible sound?

aplay -D hw:0,0 -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
pasuspender -- aplay -D hw:0,0 -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
  1. If you can observe sound working at the ALSA layer, then it may be a PulseAudio issue. The first thing to try might be to get of any existing use configuration in ~/.config/pulse/
rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/

then logout and back in again. It will be recreated by PA again.

What does the following command report about the PA configuration?

pacmd list sinks

i started going through the sound guide and i can’t beileve that alsa-firmware did not get installed with everything
else . so now my sound is up and running . thanks very much for the help !

i came back tonight and turned on the computer and the sound did not work again .
when i try to run " rcalsasound start " i get a command not found .

That has been deprecated for years. The relevant soundcard driver is loaded at boot anyway. (You could try unloading and re-loading the driver by hand.) Do the commands I gave in the last post produce audible sound?

no sound came out of the command line tests .

Default sink name: alsa_output.pci-0000_08_00.0.analog-stereo

well now i seem to have more problems . when booting up i get hangs . it is acting like the way the last motherboard died .
i am suspicious of the power supply . the voltages jump around a lot . the 12 volt rail is at 12.5 volts and the 5 volt rail is
at 5.4 volts . the unit is 12 years old . i am going to get a new one .

so i have a new power supply in with no problems . i went all the way through the sdb audio guide
and i still have no sound .

i ran this :

reidkb@linux-lzrq:~> lsof /dev/dsp* /dev/audio* /dev/mixer* /dev/snd/*
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() tracefs file system /sys/kernel/debug/tracing
      Output information may be incomplete.

and despite the warning there is no /dev/dsp , /dev/audo or /dev mixer .

I’m not sure what you were trying to demonstrate with that command. I get the same with my working card. The relevant device path is /dev/snd/

 ls -l /dev/snd/

Check amixer to make sure nothing muted perhaps. Then run the alsa-info.sh diagnostic, and share the link to the output it uploads to an online server so that it can be reviewed further.

after fiddling around with all the sound settings i could get my hands on , i did a cold boot
and now i have sound .

Ok, good to read that you’ve got it working again. A bit too vague to guess at what config issue you had, but make sure you take notes about what configuration you needed to make to have audible sound, so that you don’t go round in circles with this.
