No sound whatsoever

I installed Leap 42.1 and there is no sound at all. I’ve checked everything and still no sound.

Suggestions

Yes, read the troubleshooting guide first.
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Audio_troubleshooting

So I did this:

hyperkahler:/home/mat # cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [MID ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel MID
HDA Intel MID at 0xf9ff8000 irq 27
1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfbbfc000 irq 17

Not too sure what this means…

Go to yast-sound run the test there bottom bottom right.

You have 2 sound devices one an Intel based chip and the other through the NVIDIA card for HDMI sound

Best to follow instruction in https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Audio_troubleshooting

Be sure volume controls are not set to 0

Install pavucontrol which allows easier control of source and sink

I’ve done all that and still absolutely nothing.

Did run /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh

If so show us URL of results

So no help whatsoever.

Thank you. I thought tumbleweed and Leap 42.2 were the same thing. The 42.1 was a typo.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that sound is beyond SUSE.

Well that would be a misinformed conclusion, but your diagnostic information will help others to advise further.

I’ve changed the thread prefix to match the openSUSE version you’re actually using.

Try the following from a terminal…

speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav

Your sound is muted in your mixer. Look at this from that script …

Your sound will not work with the Master volume OFF (muted).

There may be other problems - but with that muted you have no chance for audio.

Please unmute that.

I installed openSUSE 13.2 and now everything is running fine.

Glad to read its working .

I venture an opinion that if the master volume had not been muted in Tumbleweed you would have had sound. Note there is no support now for 13.2 as it has 'reached end of life".

It appears to be relatively stable unlike some of the newer versions.

I turned up every volume control I could find. If this didn’t work then I suggest that the people at SUSE could do with a rethink of how they make such programs available.

Well looks like you missed the master mute. The diagnostic script makes that pretty clear. Its also pretty clear in the mixer if you know what to look for.

Next time, if this happens, then I can walk you through a fix if it the same problem (I can give you a command line amixer entry to send from an Xterm). Or point out what to look for on your mixer.
