No sound in Quake

I got quake runing and it works fine, but there’s no sound output, I get:

/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy

I also have the same problem with Hexen II. (uses the same engine more or less)
Any ideas on what’s causing this and how to fix this?

That’s because the game uses OSS instead of ALSA.
I suppose it can work with ALSA’s OSS compatibility layers. But isn’t people that wants to play Quake nowadays using a modern engine as DarkPlaces or playing through QUAKE LIVE?

Well I got a bunch of Id games out of a sale though Steam, including the two I mentioned.
And I would rather not play them in Steam unless I have to ;).
I’m using nquake, I tried DarkPlaces, and while the sound on it is working, I like nquake better.
As for Quake live that’s more like Quake 3.

nquake seems to be just an installer for ezQuake. And ezQuake seems to support ALSA (SourceForge.net Repository - [ezquake] Contents of /branches/ezquake_20/snd_alsa.c). So probably you just need to adjust your configuration to use it.
