Hi everybody.
Today (6th ocotober) I’ve updated my tumbleweed to the latest updates, but after when i restarted and logged in back to KDE there isn’t any desktop or anything related to the KDE (no taskbar,no desktop,no plasma shell,…) , just the dolphin (file manager) is opened by default on login and even this windows has no borders,no buttons (close,minimize,maximize,…)
This tumbleweed running on a VM, with :
kernel 4.2.1
plasma 5.4.1-1 ,all with standard tumbleweed repos.
Any solution?
Well, that depends on what’s wrong.
I did a fresh installation in VirtualBox yesterday, and it works fine. So it’s definitely not broken in general.
Maybe a graphics driver issue?
What card/driver are you using?
If it’s nvidia, you have to reinstall it because of the kernel update.
Can you get to KRunner? (Alt+F2)
Start a Konsole, and try to run “kwin” or “plasmashell” manually, then post the output.
It’s running in the Vmware workstation.No special graphic drivers is installed by myself.
Yes.Krunner can be runned. after the upgrade i have no kwin installed by default (It was so odd!).After installing kwin manually, when i tried to run kwin in Konsole it just shows the borders and buttons of windows but nothing related to the workspace and plasma.
I have done a “zypper dup” (but didn’t see any package upgrades related to the kde,plasma) and after that the problem solved! So unstable and Odd!
Yes, kwin is the window manager, plasmashell (package plasma5-desktop) is the desktop.

Apparently kwin_x11 and other packages got uninstalled for some reason.
Maybe conflicts when doing an update?
Or maybe some underlying libraries were outdated and incompatible.
“zypper dup” probably reinstalled the missing packages or upgraded the outdated ones now.

Dis you manage to fix the issue? I’m having the same issue and hav ran “zypper dup” over and over again last week. Also I ran a few commands to get zypper to forcefully reinstall all my 4899 installed poackages. Still no KDE desktop.
Edit: Sorry, didn’t read thorough enough, you solved your problem. Still, is there actualle such a package as “kwin_x11”? It is not available for me in any way or form.
And what exactly does that mean?
Do you only get a black screen with a mouse pointer?
Does the system drop back to the login screen when you login? Does it hang?
Or does it even drop to text mode when booting?

“kwin_x11” is the name of the executable.
The package name is “kwin5”.
