No input from microphone(s)

I am not able t get any input from the microphone(s) on my system.
Neither the internal microphone nor the microphone on the plugged in earphones with microphone produce any sound.

I have tested with Arecord, Audacity and Krecorder - no sound.

When I plug in the earphones the correct profile pops up.
This is what is shown on pavucontrol, the headphones microphone is detected.

The (lenghty) output of the alsa-info.sh scripts is (run as user):

I do see entries with Dmic (digital microphone?) , but nothing for the analogue microphone in the earphones.

I have looked at the following link, but I could not apply the suggestions to my situation.
https://forums.opensuse.org/t/xfce-no-microphone-input/142569/2

So, any suggestions would be welcomed.

Unfortunately, the alsa-info.sh output is not complete. Best just to let that script upload to an online server, and post the link to it here IMHO.

I note that you appear to have PulseAudio and PipeWire active concurrently on this system…

!!Sound Servers on this system
!!----------------------------

PipeWire:
      Installed - Yes (/usr/bin/pipewire)
      Running - Yes

Pulseaudio:
      Installed - Yes (/usr/bin/pulseaudio)
      Running - Yes

I’m not sure if that is causing an issue here, but as a first step I would replace PA with the ‘pipewire-pulseaudio’ package. This will install the ‘pipewire-pulse’ daemon (which integrates with the PipeWire media server).

Also, please share the output from

inxi -Aa
dmesg | egrep -i "snd|firmware"

When you attempt to record using one of the applications you mentioned, check the pavucontrol ‘Recording’ tab and make sure it is pointed at the appropriate device. Report back.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

As requested, here is the link to the full output of alsa-info.sh:

alsa-info script output

And the result of inxi - Aa:

  Server-2: PulseAudio v: 17.0 status: active with: pulseaudio-alsa

Interesting is that this output shows PipeWire as being off, whereas the ouput of the alsa-info script shows both being active.

I have installed pipewire-pulseaudio as you suggested.
I tried to record via the headphones microphone with Audacity. Unfortunately still nothing was picked up.

During the recording, the pavucontrol recording tab does show the correct microphone being used.

Hopefully this additional information helps to find a solution.

It would have been better to run the inxi command after you had installed ‘pipewire-pulseaudio’. To know the current state, please show the results from

inxi -Aa
systemctl --user list-units | egrep -i "wire|pulse"

Thanks again for your continued suggestions.

The output from inxi - Aa is

Audio:
Device-1: Intel Alder Lake PCH-P High Definition Audio
    vendor: Fujitsu Client driver: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl

status: off 2: wireplumber status: active tools: pactl,pw-cat,pw-cli,wpctl

systemctl --user list-units | egrep -i “wire|pulse” output is:

pipewire.service loaded active running PipeWire Multimedia Service

Strange that PipeWire status is reported as ‘off’ via inxi, but the systemd untis are reported as active and running, and the pulseaudio units are still present. Restart your computer and run the same again please. Check if you have working sound.

Kudos for responding on a Sunday!

These are the results after a reboot:

So, the pulseaudio is gone after the reboot. But still no input from the microphones.
Strange that both the internal and the headset microphones are silent.
The mixer does not seem to mute the microphones either.

Ok, that looks better from a sound server perspective. More research needed with respect to the mic issue.

FWIW, here’s a similar Debian thread (same chipset):
https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=160940

What does the following command report?
arecord -l

Try testing the mic test using arecord…
arecord --duration=5 --format=cd --device=hw:0,6 test-mic.wav

I have tried with both microphones. Again, nothing is recorded.

I have looked at the sound setting in Yast. The sound card is shown as not configured.
When I try to configure it and play a test sound nothing can be heard.
The speaker icon in the bottom shows the audio as muted. I cannot unmute it any more.
Re-opening Yast sound shows the sound card as not configured again.

The YaST sound utility is considered deprecated. In general, there is no need to make any explicit configuration (although occasionally a driver option may be required for a specific hardware implementation).

I have tried a live version of Kubuntu - nothing either.

I can only recommend submitting a bug report for this.

https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports

I have submitted a bug report today.
Thanks again for your assistance.
