Nivida Geforce 4

Would a Nvidia Geforce 4 graphics card be supported for openSUSE? My friend gave me it, and said that it was. But he doesnt use Linux. :\

Yep, drivers for older NVIDIA cards still are available, also from the repos. Which model is it?

I’m not exactly sure, but I pretty positive He said Nvidia Geforce 4 64g. I have no idea what that is, but he said that it is better than the card I have now which is an ATI x700 Pro. It has almost no support.

Just a quick question. How do i install my Nvidea geforce 4 card? Right now I am using the “radeon” driver as shown.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc Device 2302
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 18
        Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable)
        Memory at fdef0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
        I/O ports at ee00
[virtual] Expansion ROM at fde00000 [disabled]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: radeon

When I put in the Nvidia card, I’m guessing I will have to install the open-source Nvidia driver? Is it that easy?? :P

The open source drivers (nv or nouveau) are already there:

find /usr/lib*/xorg/modules/drivers -name "nouveau*" -o -name "nv*"

Just remove/rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf, turn off, replace your graphic card, reboot and see what happens. You can later install the proprietary driver (nvidia) if you like.
