New (?) MDNS spam - How to stop?

Hy!

An older install of TW KDE with a taskbar widget shows spikes of outgoing traffic (320 b) every second or so, which I didn’t see (recognize?) in the past.

The command

ss

and alike with option -t or -u or | less doesn’t give ANY output at all (blank, can’t be stopped with CTRL+C), very strange.

So I started Wireshark and there I see lots of

8839 19.428418329 10.10.110.139 224.0.0.251 MDNS 76 Standard query 0x0000 PTR _rtsp._tcp.local, "QM" question

Avahi is disabled in Yast -> Services, so what could I do more to stop this?

…apparantly Pidgin is the source of this spam, even if connected to no account, but open in the background.

Sorry for that!

Then the only question is: Why is

ss

(run in root console) not giving any output?

btw ss command doesn’t work on this machine in a normal user console either, while on on other TW/Leap installs it gives the expected output. How come?

With htop I found a lot of ss processes in status D, so after a reboot I did again ss and got “Killed”

user@dell6:~> ss
Killed
user@dell6:~> ss

…and only after the second ss the console doesn’t responded. What’s that?!?

Being a bit curious (I did not use ss, but used netstat for such things), I called ss a few times from konsole with a KDE session. No problems seen. It gives a rather long list and the stops. This can be repeated. This observation does not really help you, except that it tells you it is not a general problem.

In dmesg I get upon starting ss

People will not see that (except me, but I am an exception). Better start a new thread with a good title about what is now the subject. You can always post a link to this thread if you think that is needed.
