New Install - Root password invalid in KDE for myrlyn

Just installed Leap-16 beta.

During installation I added my user but did not set a root password or key. It wasn’t clear from the installer if it was required and/or what would happen if I didn’t set it. Not warnings.

Install went fine. Once in KDE I tried to start myrlyn and was prompted for “root’s password”. Well, I don’t have one. Since it wasn’t set I tried my first user account password and empty, neither worked.

I get “Permission Denied” and a message about needing to be in the wheel group. I checked, my user is in the wheel group and sudo works as expected.

I tried sudo myrlyn from a terminal but got could not connect to display error.

Is this a bug with KDE settings, a bug in the installer (i.e. allowing me to install without a root password) or something else, i.e. asking for root instead of using sudo for my user?

Given my current situation how can I set my root password. Given that sudo works, I’m hoping this should be possible… somehow.

@MartinSGill Hi and welcome to the Forum :smile:
In a terminal if you run sudo -i enter your user password should get you to a root shell, then enter passwd to set a root password.

Thanks @malcolmlewis that solved it.

Where is the best place to report this as a bug? Seems to me the installer shouldn’t allow this to happen.

sudo -E myrlyn

Yep!! The agama installer is very much lacking in install options and is bug ridden, considering it’s used in a Beta stage.

@myswtest

It’s a beta, I don’t mind that.

What I do mind is that when I reported this issue I was treated with condescension and told it was my fault.

I’m sufficiently angry that, I’m done with SUSE.
