New install not starting

Hi all,

I am new to Linux and installed a new 13.1 OpenSuSE on my old Dell Latitude D830.

  1. the Installation worked fine until AutoConfig
  2. after restart the Installation was continued and the system rebooted automatically, but shut down before starting KDE
  3. I left the computer cool down (more than an hour) and started again, this time I got the message (in console mode before starting KDE) that the CPU 0 would be over temperature threshold
  4. KDE started and shut down soon after.

I use 64 bit OS13.1 on above mentioned Notebook with NVIDIA Quatro NVS 135M, 2GB RAM, BIOS V17 (latest version), ext4 file system. Sadly I don’t kno what Kernel the Installation DVD is.

And yes, fan and system is dust free!

Hi
And you can hear the fan working?

In the system BIOS, is there a BIOS section that shows the cpu
temperature etc?

Sure the heatsinks for both the CPU and GPU are seated properly, and
the thermal compound is good?

Yes, and it is not only working, it adjusts its speed. On start up it has full speed, reduces the speed to about 50% while loading modules (or whatever the lines on the screen want to tell me) and turns nearly off when the login comes up. It increases to about 50% after login and remains in that speed until shutdown (unexpected).

I am not sure, will check tonight or tomorrow.

That is a good question. I gave the notebook to an IT crowd, they told me that they cleaned the thermal paste and reapplied it when installing the “old” sink (some coper structure for both GPU and CPU) and the new fan (the old one was broken).
I didn’t use the system for a while after that and now started (3 weeks ago) with the project of getting the WinXP off and Linux on.
