New install boots into black screen and reboots after a minute

Hi friends,

I am new to openSUSE and this is my first time installing the OS. I successfully installed the network image without any issues but booting into the OS is proving to be difficult.

After the installation I reboot but once I get past the ‘decrypt drive’ screen, it goes into a black screen that hangs for about as minute and then reboots. While it’s hanging at the black screen, my keyboard backlight is off, so I can’t use the keyboard during this stage.

I have tried the recovery mode and that boots me in just fine. I tried to run updates in the terminal and everything is up-to-date. Not sure how to resolve this?

I am using an ‘Intel NUC 12 Enthusiast’ device which has an Intel ARC A770M GPU. This GPU works fine on Arch and Debian with backports. It requires kernel 6.2 for stability and I see the openSUSE kernel is 6.6, so I am not sure what the issue here really is.

Any help is appreciated

Hi,
"decrypt drive’ " - what kind of encryption are you using?

The encryption that openSUSE installer offers during the install process

@Boogieman @otsoa Hi and welcome to the openSUSE Forum :smile:

@Boogieman On the other distributions, what Desktop environment where you booting to, the same and same version etc, which in openSUSE is?

At boot, if you press e to to edit grub and then arrow down to the linux/linuxefi line, press end key and append nomodeset and then press F10 to boot. Do you get to the desktop environment ok (it may not be at the correct resolution)?

Hi @malcolmlewis, I appreciate the warm welcome.

On Debian Stable, I was using KDE Plasma with kernel 6.5 from the backports. On Arch, I am using kernel 6.6.7 with no issues.

Nomodeset in GRUB was the first solution I tried, but it just continued to behave the same. I added nomodeset right behind splash=quiet like this:

splash=quiet nomodeset

Right now I’m booted into the DE with ‘recovery mode’. Are there any logs or anything we can look at to see what the issue is so we can find a solution?

@Boogieman Need to see the output from cat /proc/cmdline and systool -vm i915 (the Parmeters) section from the other distributions to see what options are set/not set in openSUSE.

BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-6.6.6-1-default root=/dev/mapper/system-root single

Top is Tumbleweed
Bottom is Arch

cat /proc/cmdline
initrd=\6846e1785f4c4e709be2c66f6ea74049\6.6.7-arch1-1\initrd nvme_load=YES nowatchdog rw rootflags=subvol=/@ rd.luks.uuid=ab14ebd0-46a4-448a-864f-b7460eee7ab7 root=/dev/mapper/luks-ab14ebd0-46a4-448a-864f-b7460eee7ab7 systemd.machine_id=6846e1785f4c4e709be2c66f6ea74049

Parameters section is empty on Arch for systool command you provided.

@Boogieman not much there…

Can you check the output (on openSUSE) from journalctl -p3 and see anything about the GPU?

@Boogieman can you also post the output from /sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 "VGA|Display|3D"

Sounds like this issue… https://www.mail-archive.com/intel-gfx@lists.freedesktop.org/msg331271.html

I agree it must be the same issue in that link you provided.

@Boogieman Ahh so it’s intel hybrid, the 770M is for offload…

So what desktop environment in openSUSE and is it runn X11 or Wayland? And on the other distributions, desktop and X11 or Wayland?

Any BIOS option to disable the dGPU as a test?

@Boogieman can you add to the grub option nosimplefb=1 at boot and see if that helps.

I have KDE Plasma on openSUSE and it’s running X11.

On other distributions, I use both X11 and Wayland with no issues.

No bios option to turn off any of the two GPUs.

@Boogieman that screenshot is after adding that kernel boot option? If so change to 0 instead of 1.

1 Like

Changing to 0 instead of 1 behaved like the original issue. Black screen that hangs for a minute before restarting system.

@Boogieman So now if you try the boot option i915.force_probe=46a6 or the other 5690 also try adding nosimplefb=0

What do you mean other 5690?
