network manager disabled

i am running 11.2. i have finally worked out wireless connection, but only when i have selected traditional method with ifup. the network manager always shows disabled when at home, it worked fine when i was at school today. i have searched around to find out what is the deal with the network manager but have not been able to find/understand anything.

so:

  1. is network manager important? more efficient/effective with wireless connection?
  2. should i bother as i have connection without using it?

i dont quite understand what is happening and why, so if someone would be able to explain i would appreciate it.

cheers

You have two choices: (1) use ifup, or (2) use NetworkManager.

If you use ifup, NM is disabled. The advantage of NM is that you can
easily switch among more than one wireless connection. If you always
connect to the same one, then use ifup. With ifup, you need to use YaST
to reconfigure the wireless, which is unhandy.

Or keep using ifup, and install WICD which will give you the same ability to scan for and then choose between connections, or automagically connect to regularly used networks.
