Netgear WG111T help

Having great difficulty getting wifi to work on my new HP dv7t

Love the laptop and everything else has gone fairly smooth, with exception of Firefox/Flash.

I’ve tried both 32bit and 64bit installs and settled on 64bit, fewer qwirks!

I have temporarily abandoned hope of getting the onboard wifi working, search turned up nothing and no response to this thread

Intel WiFi Link 5100AGN - openSUSE Forums

Sooooooo went to the HCL and found a Netgear WG111v2 reported as working in most Suse versions so I ordered one.

First I discovered that 32bit firmware doesn’t work in Suse 11 64bit so downloaded 64bit firmware from Netgear site and couldn’t get that to install.

Next went to the Realtex site following the link in the HCL where the WG111 is reported to work in Suse 64 and downloaded the Linux drivers from the Realtek site.

Installing the failed with numerous errors.

Finally I tried downloading the 64bit Windows drivers from the Realtek site for the RTL8187 and they seemed to install OK using ndiswrapper but still no network card detected in Yast and no wlan0 in iwlist.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I’ve had little difficulty getting wifi working since using Suse in 2000(version 9 I thiink) with numerous onboard wifi cards and plug in cards but I’m at a wall with this one!!!

No you didn’t order a WG111v2(Realtek), you ordered an entirely different
chipset device…a WG111T(Atheros).

As they say…the devil is in the details. [In this case, a ‘T’]

And, after that, you chased after Realtek drivers for a WG111v2,
which you don’t have and, as expected, nothing is detected.

Take a look here:
Linux wireless LAN support http://linux-wless.passys.nl
and look closely at the device-id and you’ll see that
what you now need is the Mad-wifi driver. [ID 1385:4251 Netgear, Inc WG111T]

That said, the RED box may not be good news.

Ski_K2 may not wish to revisit the Intel WiFi Link 5100 but user KimOlsen on an Ubuntu forum reported getting the Intel WiFi Link 5100 to work less than a month ago:
[ubuntu] Intel Wireless Wifi Link 5100 on Hardy - Page 2 - Ubuntu Forums](http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=879134&page=2) (post 13#)

the post also refers to an Intel release, describing support for the 5100 Wifi Link 5300 and 5100 Series [LWN.net]

Thanks for pointing out that costly little detail! The link to the list is very helpful!

I would prefer to get the onboard card working so thanks for that link!
