My Broadcom BCM4311 NEVER WORKED 12.1 not withstanding

Every time time a new Suse Version gets released. I can’t wait for that fateful day to arrive and even sync up the my iPhone to the Suse countdown clock so the moment it’s released I can jump on the bit torrent bandwagon and start downloading my very own ISO image. I’m filled with excitement and glee and eager anticipation that finally, finally the Broadcom driver up and running. But so far >:(
I REALLY like the Suse product, however, NO matter what I’ve tried, no matter how many of the fixes talked about in the forums, no matter how many times I install the WL drivers and kernels from the Packman reposities and piddle this and tinker that and blacklist something else etc., etc., etc., adnausium, I have never been able to get the Broadcom 4311 wireless LAN in my HP Pavillion DV2000 to work.
** HOLY S H I T NOVELL!!!** The Broadcom BCM series cards have been around so long they’re practically digging them with them up alongside fossilized dinosaur dung!!! The wireless forum is chock full of posts from people regarding issues with the Broadcom drivers that simply DO NOT WORK for anybody, even the Linux super users but still you seem to ignore the problem. I would think after 4 major Suse versions since the Broadcom wireless LAN’s were first introduced (Suse 9.1 to 12.1) you should have had this thing working by now without all this torture!!!

Honestly, this is not a Novell problem. It is because broadcom does not provide enough information about their cards for the open source community to be able to come up with drivers for all of them.

There are different broadcom cards. With opensuse 11.3 and 11.4, my broadcom card worked with the wl drivers from the packman repo. With 12.1, it works natively (no wl driver needed). But apparently, some broadcom cards still have problems with the open source drivers.

ALL the Broadcom cards work for me. If you want to blame anyone, blmae Broadcom
as they refuse to let anyone redistribute their firmware. In addition, they
refuse to help the open-source community in developing drivers for their products.

You have two choices: (1) Refuse to buy any product that includes a Broadcom
card, and make sure the vendor knows about your choice, or (2) read the
instructions on what you need to do to make it work! Your choice.

BTW, As soon as you install the firmware, your BCM4311 will work. I’m using one
right now.

what has Novell got to do with this?

simple fix: just download the linux driver from
<http://www.broadcom.com/support/> and use YaST to install it…

if you have trouble finding it on the Broadcom site, then ask their
support team to direct you to its precise location…

if, they can’t point you to it, then next time you buy hardware why not
avoid theirs and miss all this torture?

Quick solution if you use b43 driver, which is installed by default with this wireless card, at lest in my PC.
1-Add Packman Repository if you still haven’t.
2-Install package b43-firmware.
3-Restart network (command “rcnetwork restart” as root) or the whole PC.

That worked for me in 11.4 and 12.1
