comes up when i run dmesg however it does not work with any webcam apps such as cheese. any idea what i am doing wrong? i am using Opensuse 11.2 on an MSI Wind U100

My experience is for non-Gnome users, cheese does not always work well. Test it with some other applications: kopete, wxcam … etc …

If you do a search on the packman web site for webcam you get this hit:
PackMan :: Suchergebnisse

From some applications one needs various v4l applications.

For command line commanding of the webcam, there is this old thread: webcam & microphone command line fun … - openSUSE Forums

Also , for webcams, it is helpful if you provide the webcam line output of typing:

lsusb

Good luck.

ive also tried using skype and lucview
here is the output
lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 5986:0203 Acer, Inc
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

That should be supported by the uvc driver. In the uvc driver page Linux UVC driver & tools I note this being supported:

5986:0203 Bison (Advent 4211 and MSI Wind notebooks) Bison Electronics

Its possible you may be able to get better output from the uvc driver if you install some v4l apps, such as v4l, v4l-32bit … Checking the packman page for v4l gives me this hit: PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket libv4l

Did you try test for basic functionality with kopete or wxcam or with some of the command line apps I suggested from this URL webcam & microphone command line fun … - openSUSE Forums

ive tested using, skype, cheese, &wxcam. none of them were able to pick up my webcam.

Installation on MSI Wind - openSUSE
on that site it said i had to add a line to “/etc/modprobe.conf.local” but as that did not work, I added the line to “/etc/modprobe.d/99-local.conf” which i assume is the same thing?

I don’t know, but that would also be my assumption.

You still have not answered me, as to what you did wrt my recommendation for v4l. What v4l apps did you install ?

What is output of:

rpm -qa '*v4l*'
