More Nvidia driver problems - "failing initialization of X screen 0"

Hi,

I am not a linux expert but have loaded Opensuse version 9 - 13 on more than 2-dozen boxes with few problems. However, 13.2 and video issues currently have me flummoxed.

I have a brand new Dell PC with Nvidia Quadro NVS 310 graphics card installed. When installing Opensuse 13.2, the display defaults to low-resolution VGA graphics that look terrible. Upon completion of install, I am trying to install the nvidia driver for my graphics card. I can’t seem to make it work even after reviewing forums and reading online help…

So, I made a fresh start and hope someone here can help. I re-formatted all hard-drives and did a complete fresh-install of OpenSuse 13.2. System installed normally with low-resolution VGA graphics. Then, I added the following repository:
#zypper ar -f ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/13.2 nvidia

and used yast to select the appropriate nvidia driver to install via software-install option. Yast suggested the “G03” version of the driver and I loaded as suggested. I then rebooted and the system boots to level 3 now with the X11/Xorg windows manager failing.

the Xorg.0.log file shows the error “failing initialization of X screen 0”:

See the two nomodeset, remove them to start with.

Does the Dell computer have a built-in Intel GPU as well as the nVidia card?

Also please post the output of;

Okay - here is the output of the zypper command:

Looks legit - did the system have an integrated GPU as well?

The thing is - it’s trying to load Nouveau despite you having the nVidia drivers installed - perhaps a manual blacklist is in order;
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_the_hard_way#Blacklist_nouveau

echo "blacklist nouveau" >> /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf

And add

nouveau.modeset=0

As a kernel parameter. Then reboot and let’s see what happens.

Thanks for your analysis. How do I tell if I have an integrated GPU?

As my system currently stands without making any changes, inside /etc/modprobe.d there is a file called nvidia-desktop.conf which contains the single string “blacklist nouveau”. Because of this, I didn’t add anything to 50-blacklist.conf. I went ahead and reboot with the boot option specified “nouveau.modeset=0” and the results looked identical to me - the x manager shut down and the system booted into run level 3. Xorg.0.log file:

The last thing that comes to mind is using, as the log states, the initial configuration parameter that allows X to start even if it doesn’t properly detect the monitors.

Try, as root:
nvidia-xconfig --allow-empty-initial-configuration

and then:
**systemctl restart display-manager.service
**
or just reboot.

Okay, I executed the command:
#nvidia-xconfig –allow-empty-initial-configuration
and got the following reply to the screen:

WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.

Package xorg-server was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing ‘xorg-server.pc’
To the PKG_CONFIG environment variable
No package ‘xorg-server’ found
Option “AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration” “True” added to Screen “Screen0”.
New X configuration file written to ‘/etc/X11/xorg.conf’.

upon executing the systemctl command, the display manager started but the screen was completely blank. I had to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a text-display to continue. Systemctl status display-manager.service shows the display manager is active, but the video screen is not working at all.

It appears the video driver is "operating" at some level but obviously not communicating correctly with the graphics card...

Please try;

zypper in -y acpid
systemctl enable acpid
systemctl start acpid
systemctl restart display-manager.service

This is really weird, did you do some kind of minimal server install and then drop Xorg/KDE on it? I’m totally puzzled.

I really appreciate your ideas - this one really has me at a loss.

My install of Opensuse 13.2 was almost a complete default desktop KDE install. The only options I modified was the disk partitions and I enables ssh communication.

I tried the commands:
zypper in -y acpid
systemctl enable acpid
systemctl start acpid
systemctl restart display-manager.service

but the result looked identical to before. By the way, here is the output of the command:
#systemctl status display-manager.service

It is referring to “plymouth” here but I have no idea what that is…

I had the same problem on OpenSUSE 13.2 and NVidia driver nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-desktop-340.76_k3.16.6_2-36.1 - after recent “zypper up” I could not get X working any more.

I tried removing all NVidia drivers, re-installing them, rebooting etc. Then finally the following simple re-installation solved my problem quite instantly:

zypper in -f nvidia-glG03-340.76-36.1.x86_64

Note that I had all necessary drivers already installed at that time.
