MOnitor wil not display in 1920x1080 give "out of range" black screen error

HI, thanks for reading
I have recently acquired a emachines 23" e233h monitor on HDMI-0 (which is really hooked to DVI). It is supposedly capable of displaying 1920x1080 as evidenced here:

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/417194/Emachines-E233h.html?page=17#manual

When I put the monitor into that resolution, the monitor goes black and displays out of range or similar wording.
I am running opensuse 13.2, with the default video driver, with onboard radeon HD HD4290.
ALso have a Samsung syncmaster as VGA-0 that can go to 2048x1152 with no problems as the manual states.

what am I missing? Thanks in advance

Meaning that even if it supports that resolution, it doesn’t at that
frequency.

Yes I noticed that the frequency seems to be 60 hz though the manual states 67.
Is there a way to fix it? Or should I return the monitor to my friend?
thanks

If you are running KDE have a look in the monitor section of system
settings, choose the right output and go to advanced settings, does the drop
down section for refresh rate give you the option to use the right
frequency?

I cannot test this myself here as I have only my laptop with me at the
moment sorry.

If not that then you might have to start getting deep and dirty with some
config files by hand

no, it does not. only auto and 60.

60 is the correct one, 67 is KHz for the Horizontal refreshrate.

OK thanks. Do you think the monitor is faulty?

The data you posted for your monitor says it supports 1920*1080 at 67khz
H and 60Hz V. Or actually 59.963. Maybe it lies.

But it does not work… maybe it does at a lower frequency. Sometimes
the monitor displays a box saying that the mode is unsupported, but also
includes what it is getting.

Obviously you’re using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter, right? The problem is probably there, some problem with getting the EDID through.
