Missing operating system

I’ve done a new install using 12.3 DVD on a standalone AMD K7. Checked ‘Use automatic configuration’. It set it up for this

create extended partition /dev/sda2 (74.49 GB)
create swap volume /dev/sda5 (2.00 GB)
create root volume /dev/sda6 (20.00 GB) with ext4
create volume /dev/sda7 (52.49 GB) for /home with ext4

When it does the initial reboot, it comes back with

Missing operating system

and locks up.

I’ve installed this 3 times and each time it does the same problem. Also tried it without the Add-on DVD and gets the same problem.

Right at the end of the install, there’s a brief message about a directory not found. But it flashes so quickly I can’t read it all. Then the reboot.

Why and I getting this problem on a plain and simple fresh install? How can I fix it? I’ve been using openSUSE on this machine since 10.2.

Use this article https://forums.opensuse.org/content/146-using-livecd-take-over-repair-installed-system.html to boot the machine and take over the installed system. Once in, start yast in ncurses mode:

yast

and go System - Bootloader.
In the bootloader sceen, check where the bootloader is installed. You may check “MBR”. Furthermore, check whether the bootloader options are OK. Click OK, the bootloader will be reinstalled, now try booting the installed system.

Downloaded the 12.3 Live DVD. The lizard screen sits there for about 5 minutes. Then the screen goes black for a few minutes. Then the monitor displays a message that the video signal is lost.

12.3 Live does not work.

Why can’t OpenSUSE display some error messages so that people can figure out what’s going wrong? And when there are messages they flash by so quickly it’s just a tease. What’s the use?

So what is on /dev/sda1, is it a windows partition? Anyway it seems like the bootloader got confused somehow, could be you have more than one harddrive or the something and the bios confused grub2 or something. Do you have anymore details about the drives and installed OS?

I had attempted to install Win95 on this disk to see if I could recover some backup floppies. It didn’t work.

I did another install and got it to boot.

Things I did:

  • Unchecked Use automatic configuration. (I’m not sure I should have done this.)
  • Clicked Create partition setup
  • Clicked 1. IDE disk…
  • Clicked Use entire disk.

Now it boots, but there is another problem. It locks up before the login screen. I’ll try again with automatic configuration, and post another thread if I can’t get it to work.

BTW, the 12.3 rescue disk didn’t work either. Same as the live disk. When I tried fail safe it locks up on
OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.

Somebody should fix those disks.

hmm, reading floppy disks.

I think I remember that openSUSE 11.2 still did it, but I may be wrong.

openSUSE 10.2 did that without problems, for sure.

Of course, windows 95 should as well be able to read floppies, but you shouldn’t boot such a system while you’re online.

I just tried reading a floppy on my 12.1 and caused a kernel OOPs.

I had to kill -9 the mount command to exit the loop.

I then tried another floppy, a SuSE 7.1 install disk actually. The
command claimed success, but it failed.
