Microos installation failed

Hi all,
I started VmWare installation with openSUSE-MicroOS-DVD-x86_64-Snapshot20240820-Media.iso file, but shortly after installation start I got a “black screen”, like “nothing more happens”… Then I tried openSUSE-MicroOS-DVD-x86_64-Snapshot20240813-Media.iso file and I could install microos without any problems.
Then… I did transansactual-update and after that I rebooted microos server ant got “black window” again.

Please advise how to troubleshot… I wanted to use microos with 4-5 podman containters in production deployment, but now, but now I’m a little “scared” with this :frowning:

Regards,
Leon

@leonC Hi and welcome to the Forum
You might be better off importing the VMware disk image (appliance) from;

https://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/appliances/

eg https://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/appliances/openSUSE-MicroOS.x86_64-16.0.0-VMware-Snapshot20240820.vmdk

Could not import .vmdk file, got error:
" [Failed to power on virtual machine microOS. Unsupported or invalid disk type 2 for ‘scsi0:0’. Ensure that the disk has been imported.]"

Failed - Unsupported or invalid disk type 7 for ‘scsi0:0’. Ensure that the disk has been imported.

Errors

  • Unsupported or invalid disk type 7 for ‘scsi0:0’. Ensure that the disk has been imported.
  • Unable to create virtual SCSI device for ‘scsi0:0’ (/vmfs/volumes/632338e4-325f6158-ac11-20677ce06b50/ISO/openSUSE-MicroOS.x86_64-16.0.0-VMware-Snapshot20240820.vmdk).
  • Module ‘DevicePowerOn’ power on failed.
  • Failed to start the virtual machine.

@leonC I don’t use VMware, maybe @hendersj has some ideas?

I am not VmWare pro, but have installed, configured and maintained (quite) many linux OS (debian, opensuse and ubuntu) and it was all stable. I am opensuse fan and would like to use microos instead, but I’m completely lost when this kind of error appears…
Thanks for support!

Did you do any research on the error? There is a broadcom support page that references this exact error.

Unsure what version of VMware it is, likely ESX or ESXi, because with Workstation, it’s not necessary to import the vmdk files - you just create the configuration and point to the virtual disk in the disk configuration.

But if it works with the 20240813 media and not with 20240820, then it’s likely there’s a bug that @leonC needs to be report against 20240820 (which is the latest ISO as of this writing).

Testing with Workstation 17.5.2 here and the latest ISO, it installed and booted fine - but unfortunately the 20240813 ISO is no longer available for download, so I can’t test with that.

I do note that in OP’s messages, the disk is identified as SCSI - a default installation, though, uses an IDE drive, so maybe that’s the issue?

I just run into this issue on all my production MicroOS servers, all set to update weekly. I wouldn’t have noticed it but I was investigating another error and realized all my VM consoles were black. It appears to be a bug in kernel version 6.10.4 and up, broadcom messed up the vmwgfx driver.

I suppose it will get fixed in 6.11 or 6.10 backports soon enough. Such is the price of bleeding edge.
