mic doesn't run on XPS and OpenSuse 11.1

Hi all,

here the situation.

OpenSuse 11.1 (upgraded from 11.0) with gnome e pulseaudio on a XPS laptops with SigmaTel 9228 chipset (ICH8 family).
Audio out runs perfectly but I cannot hear anything from microphone. In particular I’m trying to use Skype which OS 11.0 was working very well.

I also tried by installing gamix because alsamixer shows very few controls.

Any suggestion?

Davide

I am a KDE user. I do not use gnome, nor gamix, nor alsamixer, nor Skype. I can not provide support for those apps/desktops that I don’t use.

But you could test basic mic functionality.

When I test my mic, I typically use a simple arecord command. ie something likearecord -d 10 myrecording.wavorarecord -d 10 -f cd secondrecording.wavwhere “-d 10” sets a 10 second recording. I then play back the recording with xine or mplayer or xmms (or any audio playback program).

When advising of the results of that, please make it clear as to whether you were trying your Internal mic or your external mic.

I solved!

First of all: Skype and pulseaudio have different problems of compatibility.

gamix is useful for tuning audio levels especially for the microphone.
I used gamix to select Front Mic as audio source. Then I tuned capture levels.

Finally I set up skype by following this instructions:

But the final touch is selecting the sound in device. In Skype let’s go into:

Options -> Sound Devices

and set

Sound In: HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0)
Sound Out: pulse
Ringing: pulse

Now skype is alive and kicking.

Congratulations!! and thank you for sharing your solution.
