Make huawei E3531 dongle work

Hi,

Today I received the Huawei E3531 dongle that I bought to have internet connection when I am out of home. When I connect it to my laptop, I see that OpenSUSE detects it as a wired connection but the dongle never registers to the mobile network, it is just powered on. I have seen already several threads about how to fix that but they are quite old and did not work for me. Does anybody have an updated guide (for Leap 42.2) or a clue on how to make it work?

Hi, and welcome to the openSUSE Forums! The E3531 should be supported since 2014 maybe… please check that it has switched to “modem mode” by opening a terminal and issuing:

lsusb

You should see among the devices listed a line with code “12d1:1506” (E3531 in modem mode).
If you see a line with code “12d1:15e7” instead, something prevented the stick to switch from “CD-ROM” mode to “Modem” mode.
If the stick is correctly switched, maybe you need a PIN to activate your SIMcard and connect to your carrier: insert the card in a phone, insert the PIN, then disable PIN use and put the card again in the modem.
If the stick is not switched (you should still see a CD-ROM mounted in your file manager…), some users had trouble using the E3531 in USB 3.0 ports: check in an USB 2.0 connector if you have one; but this problem should have been fixed years ago…

Thanks for the help and the welcome! The problem was the PIN. After disabling it, everything worked fine.

Stupid question: When I insert a flash disk USB, I need to unmount before unplugging it from my laptop in order to avoid data corruption; do I need to do something similar with the dongle? Obviously there is nothing to unmount but it seemed wrong to me just unplugging it without doing anything in the OS.

Nice to read you fixed it! Unmounting USB drives ensures that any write operation still in progress is completed before disconnecting the device. You should still “unmount” any MMC card hosted within the dongle, if any.
As for the modem itself, as you already noticed, there is nothing to unmount and if you have a connection still active “disconnecting” the device is like “loosing carrier” and the connection simply aborts; of course any download still in progress will result in a broken file in either case.

Nope.

Exactly.

Well, stopping the respective network connection before removing might make
sense.
