Lost desktop(?) while doing updates in zypper

Not sure if this post is in the right section.
While doing updates thru zypper my computer all of a sudden rebooted itself.
I was also transferring a file to a usb stick, checking my email on firefox and talking on a chat program.
When the computer rebooted, it came to a login screen which I did not recognize.
It had an error msg that I could not fully see because of the screen resolution size, which I could not modify.
The error msg said:

The current theme cannot be loaded due to the errors below. Please select another theme.
file:///usr/share/sddm/themes/breeze-opensuse SUSE/Main.qml:111::9: type wallpaperfader unavailable…

I did try to choose another theme while in IceWM and rebooted, but it didnot change anything.

Before logging in I had a choice of selecting either Plasma (Wayland) or IceWM Session or Plasma (X11). The only session that worked was IceWM.

My desktop icons (KDE) are not there and of course the task bar is all different.
Any idea what has caused this and how I can get my old desktop back?

You got updated to Plasma 6, and you’ve likely got a broken update.

I suggest doing alt-ctrl-f4 (or any other f key) to get to a tty, logging in, and running:
sudo zypper ref
sudo zypper dup

and letting the update resolve itself, before rebooting, and trying to login again

Cough…cough…TU, but I digress.
I see from the TW repos plasma6 has dropped. The forums will be an interesting place in the coming days. :wink:

If you have snapshots enabled your best way forward may be to use one, then do your update without being logged into any X session, so that nothing can crash X or Plasma and abort the zypper dup process. Plasma 6 is a major upgrade.

Did anyone have this weird thing in plasma 6 where if you open Discover and go to “installed apps”, you’re only seeing very few apps there ? I’m 100% certain that wasn’t the case with plasma 5 :thinking:

I only posted it here and another forum which is basically related to plasma 6, before someone else told me it’s encouraged to start a new topic for specific issues. Yes, Im new to OpenSuse and I found this website or whatever you call it here. And thanks, I got your point, but please pay attention to how u talk to people. U might be the reason why someone would start profiling this community in a negative way.

Same to me here.
Also in between there was shortly a screen seen, which I associated with wayland - don’t know why.
Other new “feature” - lock screen is broken. When coming back the screen starts flickering. Killing the session with Crtl+Alt+Backspace sometimes helps…sometimes not

Thank you @sfalken The sudo zypper ref sudo zypper dup did the trick.
However, the alt-ctrl-f4did not work for me, but I was able to choose IceWM session and went to Konsole from there.
