I have downloaded the 1.1 gig Gnome Live DVD and successfully installed to my Dell E310. Have most everything working as I want (just installed today). My question is should I try and get the 4.4 gig DVD and reinstall. Is it worth the trouble for what else may be on the DVD. I tried to find a list of what is on each one but cannot find one. So far have run into errors each time I tried to download the larger DVD. I have installed several different distros in the past few weeks and am happy with the Suse Gnome so far above the rest. PC is dedicated to linux. No other OS’s on it. Thanks
You can also download the tiny net iso image and install from network. It is the same installation as from DVD. Installation from Live CD is different (less customizable AFAIK).
I may try and setup the DVD download one more time when I get off work in a little bit and let it go while I am asleep. I did find a good mirror for the smaller DVD earlier wednesday so maybe it will work well for it. Thanks.
The real question is whether you have a fast internet connection. If you do, the Live CD install is better because it installs a limited amount of software to which you can add whatever else you want. If you don’t have a fast Internet connection, the DVD effectively gives you a personal repository to which you can return for further programs though you are of course limited by the developers’ choices. In that case, you can either purchase it boxed or download it using a computer with a fast Internet connection and then use it on one that does not.

I think that answers your own question, all software available on the full DVD is available from the repo’s.

This last answer is the correct one. No matter what medium that you use to
start, after configuring and updating, you end up in the same place. Unless you
really enjoy installing operating systems, you would get no benefit from
reinstalling from the full DVD.
Thanks for the replies. For whatever reason no matter what mirror or computer I use in my house I can’t get a download to get past 279 megabytes. Strange. I guess I will just stick with what I have and add to it, Is there a list anywhere that tells what is on the live cd vs what is non the dvd? Just to give me an idea of other apps to look for that I may not think of. Thansk again,Pat
The live CDs contain one desktop, language packs for English, Russian, German and Italian and no proprietary software. I don’t think the DVD contains any proprietary software but it has all the language packs and options for server configuration, among other things.
OK, Thanks. Doesn’t sound like much of anything I need. Getting pretty good at adding some of this stuff now anyway and it seems to download very fast. No crashing yet like that minty program. hehe. Mainly just going to use this machine for learning, music, linux eye candy type stuff. Do most of my surfing from a mac and still chained to a windows pc for Quicken.
