Lenovo Ideapad S10e and SUSE 10 dvd from USB?

Hello!

I have an installation from USB/DVD issue, I would really appreciate some guidance on this!
Setup:

  1. Desktop running WinXP
  2. Lenovo S10e netbook running Win7RC1 (just expired.) no DVD drive.
  3. 1 DVD by Novell and Lenovo with “SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10(For recovery select Restore System from the inital Menu.) November 2008”
  4. 4GB USB drive. Laptop can boot from it.
    Problem:
Need to install the system to the Laptop using the USB drive. Doesn’t install.
    What I did:
Mostly followed the guide at “Installation without CD - openSUSE.htm” my USB drive is G:
used the HP USB Disk storage format tool to make my USB bootable.
Copied all files from the dvd to the usb drive
    Moved G: \boot\i386\loader* to G:
    Deleted E: \isolinux.bin
    Renamed E: \isolinux.cfg to E: \syslinux.cfg
    Downloaded syslinux-3.85.zip from [kernel.org]
    Extract syslinux-3.85.zip to c: \syslinux
    CD’ed to c: \syslinux\win32 directory in a cmd prompt
    Ran syslinux -ma E:
    Current setup:
    G:
    ldlinux.sys
    initrd
    content
    lenovo.img (2.8GB)
    syslinux.cfg
various files (*.hlp, *.tr, *.spl, *.pcx etc) all from the boot folder.
    "syslinux.cfg":
default restore
# restore entire system
label restore
  kernel linux
  append initrd=initrd splash=silent install=exec:/run_restore showopts

implicit 1
gfxboot bootlogo

Right. USB stick. in laptop. Turn on. Boot. “Welcome to SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10!”. No Booglogo gfx like when DVD boots for some reason.
input "boot: _"
Route1:
typed linux and pressed enter.
Result:
gets to:

md: Autodetecting RAID arrays.
md: autorun ...
md: ... autorun DONE.
VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or uknown-block(3,4)
Please append a correct "root=" option; here are the available partitionsL
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on uknown-block(3,4)

Route2: pressed enter. Route3: typed linux initrd=initrd splash=silent install=exec:/run_restore showopts and pressed enter. Route 4: added noacpi to route 3.
Result of 2, 3 and 4:
It seems to go much further. Its very quick but it does this in a nutshell:

loading linux, initrd (lots of dots)
starting udev...
openSUSE intallation program v3.0.20 Linux Products GmbH
activating usb devices...
then CLS
/run_restore: line 17: /proc/splash: No Such file or Directory
No DVD drive found!
Press a key to reboot.

Route5:
The most sucessful!
linux initrd=initrd splash=silent showopts
Result:
Runs all the way through, gets to a windowed program called “>>> Linuxrc v3.0.20 (Kernel 2.6.22.5-31-default) <<<”

could not find the openSUSE Repository. Activating manual setup program
Main Menu: Settings, System Information, Kernel Modules (Hardware Drivers), Start installation or System, Verify Installation CD-ROM/DVD, Eject CD, Exit or Reboot, Power off

Cant find anything on the usb drive (obviously?) so what do I do now?
So yeah. This is where I’m at and quite stuck… not sure what other flags there are to use, what I have to move around or rename … Any guidance greatly appreciated.
Oh wait! Just had an idea. Opened lenovo.img in winrar. contents: lenovo-oem-preload.i686-6.1.5.raw
Thanks guys, Really wanna get this show on the road  apparantly the lenovo supports some super quick boot that im hoping is included in this restore DVD.

Why do you want to take the trouble of installing the old SLED? Why cant you install the latest openSUSE?

I doubt that SLED ver 10 will install on that newer hardware. At least without using a SLEDgehammer :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi
How so? AFAIK, that is probably one of the versions that ships with it,
just like HP and some others. Just remember SLE products have long
support (SLE10 out to 2013).

@OP, I suggest getting online and using SUSE Studio to create either a
minimal install of either SLED or openSUSE and create a
bootable/installable USB image and you should be good to go.
