My Kmail just started nagged me with this message in the space below the toolbar:
“Your version is older than 6 months, we encourage you to upgrade.”
So I looked at my repos as follows:
asd@localhost:~> zypper lr
Repository priorities are without effect. All enabled repositories share the same priority.

I haven’t done anything to turn off the disabled repositories.
This is very weird. “We are very confused.”
The updates have been working fine until very recently.
I have just accepted all the recommended updates when prompted. No installing unusual software, configuration changes, etc.
I presume that I need to turn back on ALL of the 16.0 repos to get Leap updates to work properly again?
I’m imagining the 15.6-1 one stays off!
Yes. I upgraded from 15.6 to 16.0 using the opensuse-migration-tool, as was recommended at the time.
Seemed to work fine (I can’t recall any errors) and I had no problems with the repos (I think?) until recently?
I have been getting various updates, including the Open-SUSE updates.
Once the 15.6 repo is gone, what you have is the default config at install, so nothing to worry about unless you need non-oss packages (which most users don’t need).
If you need those packages you should enable repo #2; other listed repos are not to be enabled for common users on a regular basis, unless you do development or debug work on the distribution.
Indeed Kmail for Leap 16 is still at 25.04 which looks “older than 6 months” but is nonetheless the current offering for Leap 16, so nothing to worry about IMHO.
If you need the bleeding edge you should install Tumbleweed (but here too Kmail is at 25.08, so “almost 6 months old” anyway…).
I have sometimes had the debug packages in place in order to report crashes via the KDE bug reporter.
Seems that Kmail is overdue for an update in OpenSUSE… https://apps.kde.org/en-gb/kmail2/ tells me that the latest version of KMail is 6.6.0 (released on 2025-12-11). There’s been some six updates in total over the last six months or so.
So I’m not too sure how/why the Kmail etc. updates are being delayed on OpenSUSE?
I do get the periodical error/crash from KMail so any updates that fix these things would always be appreciated!
FYI Tumbleweed is probably too bleeding edge for me as this is my work system!
However, I did have set up in past versions of OpenSUSE where KDE updates were available from a separate repo. Ditto with LibreOffice. Worked fine for me with rarely an error.
It is completely normal that fixed release distributions like Leap don’t ship the latest upstream version. Bugfixes and Security fixes get backported over the lifetime of the distribution release. The package version often stays at the same number.
This packaging policy is nearly the same for all fixed release distributions.
