After reading a few articles about creating “my own” desktop environment from readily available bits, I realize that I may have a problem with my e-mail.
For years, I have used kmail (from the 42.2 version of LEAP). I have kmail store my email as imap messages locally because I used to have problems with mail stored in pop files getting corrupted and causing me to lose multiple message. I know this is not usual behavior.
I see two possibilities:
Since I will still have KDE libraries installed, will kmail know enough to use the necessary KDE libraries when I am in a different desktop?
If I will not be able to easily run kmail, what other e-mail client will recognize my local imap folders so I can see my current and stored messages?

Yes, kmail doesn’t depend on having a KDE desktop - it just needs the
libraries. That’s the way it is for any application - the binaries are
linked to the libraries they need, and as long as you’ve met the
dependencies, you’ll be fine.
