Leap 16 --couple of issues with mouse action glitchy && not typing in message boxes?

Check if you have xfce-wayland installed perhaps.
zypper se -s xfce

It should appear here…
ls /usr/share/wayland-sessions/

I have ( still ) no idea how and what you’re installing, but this clearly shows

And, after install, on 1st login:

OK, the “-s xfce” shows a long list of packages, mostly showing “x86_64” or “noarch” . . . and the ls shows ~> ls /usr/share/wayland-sessions/ ls: cannot access '/usr/share/wayland-sessions/': No such file or directory

OK, thanks for sharing that data, which does indicate that XFCE is currently offering wayland based system. I’m not rushing to get this new option on Leap installed, I may get there, but not convinced this is an “XFCE” or “X” based problem.

Generally each day I am booting into a different linux distro, which a number of them have XFCE4 as the DE . . . . This morning I was running Manjaro XFCE . . . for the most part very few “bobbles” in that system . . . very few “notes” of issues get written down.

However in the Leap 16 install I have made notes on this problem of trying to type messages out and the cursor not responding, etc. And, this is a recent problem, rather than one going back to day one of fresh install . . . AND it is not replicating across my other installs, etc. Not a worry on it, I’m back in Leap to type this out, it largely is working, but I see this as a “Leap 16” issue, rather than a DE issue . . . of course, to err is human . . . . Point being that I’m not rushing for the fresh install of Leap, as I don’t think it will be the “solution,” but at some point on an idle day I will try it out.

Regardless of how you see it, you’ve been some suggestions to try for comparative purposes.

So why didn’t you show them? In particular, did you confirm xfce-wayland installed (as it appears it should be)?

Sure. Suggestions are good, but seemingly not really breathing down the neck of the issue. Some years back on another machine and perhaps on Mint, there would be problems with typing with even thumbs hanging above the touchpad that would wipe the typed words . . . very irritating to say the least. The forum gurus sort of traced it to a “synaptics” problem, but, at that time way beyond my capacity to figure out how to edit the “synaptics” file . . . . I think I eventually nuked that install and went to something else as my solution. The question for now is, would this type of problem relate to “synaptics” as far as the same intermittent nature and the handling of mouse cursor and mousing around??? Does Leap 16 have a “synaptics” package that handles mouse and/or touchpad functions???

But, as far as the xfce-wayland showing up in the ls /usr/share data, no, I did not see anything listed that could be considered to be a wayland package. So far in my linux career I haven’t opted in to wayland on any system that I had the choice on, and can say with some confidence that my current Leap 16 install has not had it installed.

I’m back in Manjaro right now, I can double check it later or copy/paste the se xfce data . . . but I would be horrified to learn that wayland is installed, and, yesterday in logging out of the XFCE session, the only other option listed was ICEweasel??? Just two options for session . . . .

Not ready to erase or enlarge my Leap 16 system to “fix” something that isn’t massively damaged, just mildly tweaked; I will wait until there is a moment to make a new install flash drive for a fresh install to experiment with.

In modern Linux environments, input devices are handled by libinput (Wayland uses it exclusively). For X11 sessions, there is a x11-driver-input-synaptics package available in Leap if you want to install it manually, but by default most touchpad and mouse handling goes through libinput.

One more time…
zypper se -s xfce
Report back with the output, and nothing more. Answers to questions and minimise the :waffle:

OK, it takes words to reply to questions, no?

Note: For an extended search including not yet activated remote resources
    please use 'zypper search-packages'.
@localhost:~> ls /usr/share/wayland-sessions/
ls: cannot access '/usr/share/wayland-sessions/': No such file or directory

Only the necessary please. Open Chat is better for long-winded verbal discussions. I tend to avoid such posts.

Anyway, the output you shared confirms xfce-wayland is not installed. Can you refresh your repos? (The repo errors show the metadata isn’t cached yet.) Then run the search again.

sudo zypper refresh
zypper se -s xfce

OK, I follow instructions on the commands, I usually run “sudo zypper ref && sudo zypper up” in Leap, and nothing has errored out about the repos; so that must be because “zypper” was invoked w/o sudo-ing it??

Anyway, now in the freshness are showing a number of wayland line items . . . .

All repositories have been refreshed.

Note: For an extended search including not yet activated remote resources please use 'zypper
    search-packages'.

This should be enough to bring in the necessary (assuming you want to test the XFCE Wayland session)…
sudo zypper in -t pattern xfce_wayland

It will want to pull in a lot of packages, so I understand if you don’t want to proceed with that.

OK, thanks for the command to install, but yeah, I don’t want to pull in a bunch of packages in this install as a “test” to see IF it fixes the problem, etc. As mentioned previously I learned the “hard” way that SUSE has no way to uninstall patterns once installed . . . . So far it doesn’t seem like we have a “causative factor” on the problem as of yet, it is still “grey.”

But, what is the argument, that my Leap 16 version is “stuck between the realms” because 16 should be wayland only, but in my case it installed as whatever it was 15.5 and X . . . but now 16 wants to be wayland-only so that effects the mouse action and typing in certain places??

All good. Only you can make that decision.

Yep, that would take comparative investigation to help narrow the cause down.

As for the Leap 16 / Wayland comment: Leap 16 does not enforce Wayland-only. Even with Plasma 6 there is a choice to choose X11 or Wayland sessions.

FWIW, I have Leap 16 and Slowroll installs - all using SDDM (Wayland mode) and the desktop launching Wayland sessions - working fine. I tested in a VM environment well before making those steps.

No…wrong conclusion. Your reported mouse/typing issue occurs in an X11 session. That doesn’t mean it won’t be a problem in a Wayland session, but you haven’t tried to know.

If you would like though, you could try installing/using the xf86-input-synaptics package (only good for X11 desktop environments).

Yes, please move it. It’s gone totally off-topic. IMHO not even a real discussion anymore.

OK . . . a single package might be better than a whole bunch of them . . . but then I thought you said that “libinputs”??? is what handles the mousing duties?? If the input-synaptics package is installed would that take over the other package handling, or would have to be selected/toggled . . . and that also would be a test/comparison to see if the behavior changes???

About to sign off on the web, but have to consider the options, add wayland to what I have now and have “options” on session . . . adding to the weight of the system, OR, fresh install of 16 in another drive . . . ??? Sort of moot, but then the problem isn’t incapacitating enough . . . more about reporting it as an issue in Leap 16 handling, care and feeding . . . .

I’ll post back if and when a decision has been investigated on it . . . .

Yes, it does by default (since years).

If I recall correctly, it will take precedence if installed, and easily verifiable by examination of the Xorg.0.log with something like

grep -i "Using input driver" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

For example, output like

[ 10.183] (II) Using input driver 'synaptics' for 'SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad'
[ 10.183] (II) Using input driver 'libinput' for 'AT Translated Set 2 keyboard

Well it will eliminate libinput from the inquiry for sure.

Since you appear to be cautious, this is probably the best path for you.

@non_space just an observation re glitchy mouse, have you cleaned/replaced mouse pad surface, likewise clean the mouse and optical pickup…
