Leap 16.1rc - grub invalid sector size 65535

after installing leap 16.1rc (btrfs with snapshots, no swap) on bare metal and clicking on reboot, the system did not boot. After restarting, it did boot. Since, it shows the following message:

error: …/…/grub-core/disk/efi/efidisk.c:grub_efidisk_open:524:invalid sector size 65535.
Enter passphrase for hd2,gpt2 (160a6a4a-****)

same error shown after a fresh install of leap 16.0, on every boot

There are quite some search results which suggest that this is due to additional partitions or connected drives…

Hi hui, thank you for commenting. I used the guided setup, the only drive attached to the machine was the USB stick where Leap was installing from.

Hi, welcome

Did you by any chance use a Ventoy USB to install?

Hi knurpht, thank you for asking. I used fedora media writer (what is just a dd=* thing I belive)

Why not using dditself then, then you are 1000% sure it a “dd thing”

Remove the install USB, and report what happens

Hi Knurpht, I removed the install USB right after clicking on ‘Reboot’ once the install was completed

Hi hcvv, I did check the install media via the promt when booting the usb and it returned “OK”

I’m going to take a wild guess - the intent of @knurpht 's question is (what happened beyond the reboot):

After you have removed the USB - and then rebooted:

“What happens after the reboot”, i.e., does the system now boot into the installed system ?

The reason is because the USB stick should be removed after installation - then choose “Boot into Leap” at the renewed boot menu.

The anticipated answers might be:
I can now boot fine
I still see the “sector size” error.

hi myswtest,

“What happens after the reboot”

for Leap 16.1rc → it did not boot. it showed around 8 lines of errors. Cold restart and it booted - everything working.
for Leap 16.0 → it did boot.
for both → the sector size error is always shown at the grub menu and both systems work perfectly

seems to be a firmware issue, not related to opensuse. Btw after a fresh install of Leap 16.1rc (online-installer) on 10/7/26, no error was shown during the first boot

How did you determine it’s firmware?

I only paid around 350 EUR for a new HP laptop (Ryzen 3, 17 inches) in 2020, increased the size of the NVMe and this is declared as a SATA device. I did not upgrade the firmware to confirm it is a firmware issue
