Putting it bluntly, the KDE Plasma version is not new enough.

I raised a KDE Bug Report related to an issue I had with the Kontact PIM module KOrganizer – <KOrganizer change to view To-Do - crash with signal: Aborted> – the KDE developer response from Allen Winter was:

I did put a lot of effort into crashes like this one for the 25.08 release.
so please upgrade when you can and try again with 25.08

In the mean time, the KDE Plasma PIM components are still regularly crashing and occupying space in the systemd coredump directory –

 # du -hs /var/lib/systemd/coredump/
771M    /var/lib/systemd/coredump/
 #
 > coredumpctl

So, what to do?

  1. Stay with Leap 16.0 and move KDE Plasma over to the KDE:Applications repository – <https://build.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:Applications>?
  2. Move to Slowroll?
  3. Move to Tumbleweed?

In my “ Leap 16.0 system upgrade experience 0001” post, “deano_ferrari” mentioned that, the move the newer KDE Plasma repositories may well relieve this issue –

Sounds like you need to raise an openSUSE bug report https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports

@malcolmlewis:

Agreed, a Bug Report will be needed to trigger the move to a newer KDE Plasma version in the Leap 16.0 repositories – I did consider that road but, chose to first bounce the issue off the Forums readers … :smiling_imp:

You have to install the repositories from openbuildservice and zypper dup from them.

zypper ar -fp 75 'https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Qt6/openSUSE_Leap_$releasever' KDE-Qt6
zypper ar -fp 75 'https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Frameworks/openSUSE_Leap_$releasever' KDE-Frameworks
zypper ar -fp 75 'https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Applications/KDE_Frameworks5_openSUSE_Leap_$releasever' KDE-Applications
zypper ar -fp 75 'https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Applications_openSUSE_Leap_$releasever' KDE-Extra
zypper -v dup --allow-vendor-change

Yes, that’s the decision I made upon installing Leap last year. Works like a dream. :wink:

Then, given the replies received, that’s exactly what I’ll do –

  • Move to to the openSUSE KDE instance of the Open Build Service and, stay with Leap 16.0.

Once that’s proven to be smooth and reliable, a Bug Report to suggest that Leap 16 moves in that direction in general, could be well worth the effort … :smiling_imp:

Done – after 2 or 3 times executing “zypper dup” …

But, first start of Kontact after the upgrade produced a single crash – < Kontact - Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.>

The second and subsequent starts function as expected – without crashing.

  • In KMail, the drop-down menus on the e-Mail items now function as expected – instead of unexpectedly disappearing after the 3rd or 4th menu entry …

More to come later.

Can only speculate here…nothing in the ~/.cache (left over from pre-upgrade) that needed clearing out first? The backtrace shows it’s in QtWebEngine, which Kontact uses to display HTML emails. Hence my thinking that if it only happened once and the next start worked, it could just be a stale cache issue.

@deano_ferrari:

It happened again this morning – thanks for the ~/.cache thought – I’ll deal with that in a moment …

@deano_ferrari:

Logged out, cleaned out ~/.cache from a VT, logged back in again –

  • Same again – 1st start of Kontact crashes with the same segmentation fault …
    Investigating with Dr Konqi drops 1.6G of debuginfo into ~/.cache/debuginfod_client/ …

What about a new User?
Do it start there?

The Kontact crash on 1st start issue has been fixed by the KDE Gear repository update this morning (283 packages changed) to Gear version 25.12.1.

  • Also confirmed in the KDE Bug Report raised by me and mentioned above.
    The root cause is a, possibly hardware specific, Qt6 GPUInfo initialization issue.

Also, please note that, Leap 16.0 with the latest KDE Gear version is running nicely and smoothly, without the annoying little Kontact PIM issues present with the KDE Plasma version currently in the standard Leap 16.0 repositories.

Next adventure: KDE Plasma 6.6 Beta release – currently running version 6.5.90 (Beta 1).
Version 6.5.92 (Beta 2) has been announced by the KDE folks.

It’s executing amazingly stably – the only minor gripes are the English-only SDDM buttons and also, some parts of the Plasma applications.
