latest tumbleweed can't be installed, video issuee.

Brief configuration of the system:
ASUS CROSSHAIR-VI-HERO x370
AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
Two cards ASUS ROG Strix RX 480 8Gb.
Two Kingston KHX3200C16D4 / 8GX slats

I tried to disconnect one video card and install the system - nothing. Loading bar appeared not as usual, at the bottom of the screen, but in the middle of the screen and shifted to the left, it seems that the screen is divided into four parts and only the left upper square is used. After such a download, the graphical installer does not appear, the monitor displays “out of range”. When you try to install with nomodeset param - only a text installer starts and shows that the GUI can not be started because the hardware has less than 96 MB of memory etc.
After installation in text mode, the system hangs up when tried to start the GUI.

I tried to disconnect one video card … shows that the GUI can not be started because the hardware has less than 96 MB of memory etc.

Not exactly very detailed. Please explain exactly what you did since the machine last appeared to work. You do not mention any hard drive (persistent storage), or what media-install image you are using.

What does the BIOS report about available memory availability? Did you try the memory test option on the install media?

Install to SAMSUNG MZVLW256HEHP-000L7, installation media: usb. Try UEFI and non UEFI install - all the same.
The only way to use tumbleweed is to install leap 15 first and then update to tumbleweed but, it’s not the way it should be.
There is no any install options when choose UEFI install. I have no problems with tumbleweed recently especially with installation process.
I can provide any detailed info about hardware (hwinfo) but it’s too long.

I’m not sure who told you this but it is totally wrong. There is no
need to install Leap prior to installing TW. Either use the net install
iso or the install DVD iso.

Ken
linux since 1984
S.u.S.E./openSUSE since 1998

I know that it’s not necessary to install leap prior tumbleweed but i can’t install tumbleweed from usb-flash any more due to video issue. Don’t use dvd (cd etc) since usb-flash became casual thing and there is not a problem of installation media, recently tumbleweed was installed via usb-flash without problems. It seems like a problem with latest amdgpu driver or something with ASUS CROSSHAIR-VI-HERO latest bios…?..

Installing from DVD instead of USB is sometimes a solution. I sort of emulate DVD installation by loading the installation kernel and initrd via an already installed Grub. Installation kernel and initrd can be downloaded directly from the repos’ loader directories. IOW, I download only two files before I start a working installation. Cmdline installation options can be found on linuxrc.

Already tried to boot from DVD - all the same. Video - wrong detected and as i mentioned: changing installation media wouldn’t help. This issue came since 4.16, 4.17 kernels, because with 4.15 - all was ok.

Create bugreport #1101628, will wait for resolving issue.
