Kwin crash in 11.2

Hello,

Yesterday, out of the blue, I started getting a message on booting that kwin was unstable and had crashed multiple times. It’s a message I and others had gotten before in relation to having installed ATI drivers that were buggy. That was fixed. I have the latest drivers from ATI and they’ve worked fine for the past 3 weeks or so. I’m not sure it’s a graphics driver issue and I don’t want to uninstall them just to discover they weren’t the problem.

The kwin crash issue makes the desktop pretty much unusable. It gives me the option to send a bug report but that’s not doable because of the crash. It also tells me the report it does generate isn’t sufficient to be useful and I can’t install what would make it useful (-debuginfo packages). The crash report ends with a question about “corrupted stack”.

I didn’t install anything new yesterday. One other thing I noticed is in GRUB. I dual boot this machine with Windows 7. I had recently set up the virtual machine (xen?) and it had appeared on GRUB’s list of possible things to load. I rearranged the order to put xen last after windows. It’s now at the top of the list, which is not where I put it.

Any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone else? Should I just uninstall then reinstall the graphics drivers? Or is there something else I should look for? Thank you for your attention.

I’m wondering why you installed xen?
Why not VirtualBox

So which boot option are you booting from?

Personally I would dump xen

Hey there,

There are many things running through my head about your problem. First off, you mentioned something being wrong with ATI drivers and you had fixed that issue. But, I remember there being a kernel update within the last couple of days. Could be the cause…You may need to do whatever it is you did again to get your card working again (i.e. reinstall ATI drivers/rebuild kernel modules).

One thing that confuses me is you state that you can’t install the debug info. Do you not have an internet connection available? Unfortunately, installing those packages would be very helpful.

A couple more things that would be helpful. What version of KDE you’re running and your kernel version along with ATI driver info.

Honestly, I had this problem a couple months back on different hardware, but the problem seem to fix itself. A little more info is necessary before we can get to the root of the problem.

Hello,

Thank you for the replies. I’ll try to answer them in sequence:

There are many things running through my head about your problem. First off, you mentioned something being wrong with ATI drivers and you had fixed that issue. But, I remember there being a kernel update within the last couple of days. Could be the cause…You may need to do whatever it is you did again to get your card working again (i.e. reinstall ATI drivers/rebuild kernel modules).

I’ve uninstalled the 10.1 ATI proprietary drivers (I have a Radeon 3850) to see if they had caused a problem, using boot level 3. I then ran the command “sax2 -m 0=Radeonhd” after I had uninstalled the drivers. I still got the kwin crash message when I rebooted, but my GUI (particularly scrolling in Firefox) seemed more responsive than before. Then I rebooted again into level “3” and ran the command sax2 -m 0=vesa. From what I understand that uses a very generic graphics driver. It still didn’t solve the problem though. Kwin still crashes.

One thing that confuses me is you state that you can’t install the debug info. Do you not have an internet connection available? Unfortunately, installing those packages would be very helpful.

I have tried to install these packages. I have an internet connection. However the kwin crash kills my keyboard for some programs, the password login dialogue for YaST being one of them. I can cut and paste it from another program but Yast does not come up when I do this. Nothing happens. I’m aware I could install them using the CLI in boot level 3 but I’ve never done anything like that. The information for doing this is all available to me using the GUI but I won’t have that and will have to boot back into windows if I need more info or run into trouble. I’m willing to do that if that’s what it comes down to, but I’m not looking forward to it. I’m hoping there’s another way to do it than that. I will explore this further.

One problem is that a lot of the usual tools I use are gone because of the kwin crash. I can’t move windows around the desktop. These aren’t usually insurmountable problems, but they are annoying.

A couple more things that would be helpful. What version of KDE you’re running and your kernel version along with ATI driver info.

I should have checked this while I was still in openSUSE, but I’m running the version of KDE that came with 11.2. I have NOT upgraded to the version that was released a few days ago. I run openSUSE every day and keep it updated. I didn’t notice a kernel update but it may have happened without me noticing. I will post my kernel version later. Graphics card info is above.

Honestly, I had this problem a couple months back on different hardware, but the problem seem to fix itself. A little more info is necessary before we can get to the root of the problem.

Every time I reboot I hope that it has just gone away. Unlikely to happen though :(.

So which boot option are you booting from?

I installed xen because it’s there, and on a whim because I found an old game (Mechwarrior 2:Mercenaries) and thought I might be able to run Windows 98 using xen and play the game again. However that whim got overwhelmed by the numerous other things I need to do. I don’t even know if it is possible but I wanted to explore. I will eventually try it or VirtualBox.

Thanks again. Any further suggestion would be helpful.

Just wanted to say I’ve got the same problem but managed to work around it by reinstalling an older ATI driver. This is with a HD 2600 card. The driver that failed is the most recently available on the website dated 17th Feb 2010.

The various versions involved are:

openSUSE: 11.2 (with security patches from 24th Feb)
Kernel: 2.6.31.12-0.1-pae (recompiled from a cloneconfig)
KDE: 4.3.1 “release 6”
kwin: 4.3.1-7.5
ATI (working): 9.12 (fglrx version: 8.681-1)
ATI (broken): 10.2 (fglrx version: 8.702-1)
xorg: 7.4-35.3

and using the Plastik window styling. I couldn’t find the relevant debug rpms but might try again later. Unfortunately this is the machine I use for work and I can’t devote too much time to figuring out a solution right now.

It should be possible to use a different window manager with KDE when kwin crashes though, have you tried putting in icewm (I think that was installed by default) when the crash handler pops up choose alternate window manager box?

Some further information. It turns out it also can crash with the older ATI driver. I was trying to get some more information and after switching back and forth from the new one it now fails regardless of driver version. No idea what changed but decided to take the plunge and start upgrading things.

It still fails after upgrading to 4.3.5, the latest stable KDE version available through the openSUSE 11.2 upgrader. I went a bit further and looked at the KDE 4.4 release from factory. kwin 4.4.0-415.1 does not crash with the newest ATI driver however there are a number of other issues, most notable is that some fonts (Adobe ones in particular) no longer render in KDE applications and revert back to monospace. The desktop context menu no longer appears and there is a crash if I try to change the settings for the desktop through the systemsettings application.

Hello all,

I’m still having the kwin crash problem. I finally got around to trying to fix it again (mostly because my windows 7 release candidate is about to expire) and I’ve been trying to see what I can do. It’s nice to know I’m not alone with the problem. Also, just for information, if I start and then close Firefox I lose my keyboard in yast. I can’t write anything. I can use Firefox to a degree, but it won’t let me sign in to these forums. I’m in windows right now to post this.

I managed to get yast running and added a debuginfo server. I then installed the debuginfo package for kwin. Is there more I need to install to get good bug reports? Here’s what is spat out after I installed the package (but before rebooting it. Does that make a difference?)

Does this tell anyone anything useful? I’d like to get openSUSE back up and running properly. I’ll reinstall if need be, but that’s a pain I’d like to avoid. Thanks.

Did you ever try creating a new user account and login there, see if is the same!?

Hello Caf,

Thank you for the reply. I just created a new account (logged in as root to do it, root had the same crash). Then I logged out of root, into the new account and was greeted with the same kwin crash. So, it seems to not be limited to my usual account. Thanks again.

There are some differences about your repos for 11.2 that puzzle me, though I’m not sure it will matter.
By default in 11.2 all repos are 99 priority, your oss and non-oss are 120, like in 11.1

And you don’t have a Packman repo refreshing either?!

I would make those changes and run

zypper dup

But I’m suspecting you may have a hardware issue that will not be solved by this. And we may have to start digging in the log files.
Did you try logging in under IceWM (I assume you don’t have gnome installed as well)

Hello Caf,

I did as you instructed and changed the repositories. I also discovered IceWM. Wow, I’ve got some functionality back. Didn’t know this existed. Very useful.

I wanted to run zypper lr -d again and paste the results here but I can’t seem to figure out how to cut and paste in iceWM. I have done some googling but I’m heading off to work soon so I don’t have that much time.

I ran zypper dup after fixing the repositories. I still get the crash in kwin.

I don’t have gnome installed. I like KDE, but maybe I should install gnome to be on the safe side. However, since I’m learning a lot, I want to continue to try and fix this. Thanks again.

Any suggestions as to what might be going wrong? I’m hoping to be able to fix this, as I want to make sure I have openSUSE functioning before I try mess around with my now largely defunct windows partition.Thanks.

Did you ever try creating a new user account, I mentioned it earlier. Login with it and see if it’s the same!

Sorry, I see you did.
What graphics device do you have?

OK. Sorry I see you may be using ATI
I would look at seeking the best driver solution for it.

Why do you have 3 active packman repositories??

Hello Caf and Gogalthorp,

I’ve just solved the problem. I was running out of room on my hard drive, had to reinstall windows and needed to fix openSuse. So I invested in a new 3 times larger hard drive and put it into the computer and reinstalled everything. It didn’t work out beautifully but openSuse seems to be back without the kwin crash. I hope I don’t have a repeat of the problem. We’ll see what happens. Thanks for all your help so far. If I run into trouble again I’ll be back. Thanks again.

Good news for you.
Thanks for letting us know.
