Alex,
this is from the perception of a visually rather unimpaired, so bare with me.
Start Yast, enter the root password.
Go to Software, Software Management.
Search for “kdeaccessibility” and install it.
It will probably ask you to allow the installation of a text-to-speech engine, accept that.
After that, go to the KDE Control Center, Regional & Accessibility and check if “Text to Speech” is enabled.
Restart KDE, i.e., log out and back in.
It should work now.

Hi,
So I did that. Now how do I use it to navigate my OS. It doesn’t start up at start up, not more than a box to type text to speak.
Also, how do I install the Gnome Desktop Enviornment? Orca works great.

Alex,
There should be an icon in the systray.
Anyway, in KDE applications, just highlight the text you want it to read, then go to TOOLS, SPEAK TEXT.

Yast, Software, Software Management, set the filter to “Patterns” and select the Gnome Base System at least. Note that Orca isn’t included.

Hi,
As I’ve said before, I am comming from Ubuntu. Is there a way for Orca to act like it does from within Ubuntu on Opensuse. I can’t get it to read much in the pannels, like the Orca box, and the Ajasoned Preferences pannel for example.
Thanks for you help,

Alex,
I never used Ubuntu, nor Orca, and my Gnome knowledge is limited. Maybe someone else jumps in. Since we are in an Opensuse forum, it may help if you describe what exactly Orca does on Ubuntu which it doesn’t do on Opensuse.
