Konqueror is going krazy.

Hi,

I have made an upgrade to a pc from LEAP 15.3 to the latest version 15.4
One the applications I’ve used for a long time was konqueror since I need for working reason to have a separate documentation browser opened.
After the upgrade I noticed konqueror was rather strange.
I had been trying to recover konqueror to the former glory but to no avail.
Evey time I try to open a html page it just starts opening endlessly windows after window and it only stop when I go to the cli and kill all the processes.
Worst then that every time I tried to open a simple folder when running as a simple file manager mode opening a directory does the exact same behavior … it starts a endless cycle of opening one empty windows after the next and it only stops by killing all the processes.
Did anyone had the same problem ? Or is this just a problem of my own user.
Note: I tried the same on another account on the same pc and one the behaviors does not occur. The browsing of directories works fine, opening a Html from by clicking on it results in the same endless opening empty windows loop.
Regards.

I have no idea if this is related.

Konqueror → Settings → Configure Konqueror → KDE Performance.

I always uncheck both boxes there. That seems to make konqueror more stable.

I’ve done that and the result is the same . Also choosing any option for the web engine is the same.
The strangest part is that I have also deleted all entries on the following directories:

~/.local/share/konqueror

(this one seems to be the one used/reconstruted between re-installs on the latest current version of KDE/Plasma)

~/.config/
~/.kde/share/apps/
~/.kde/share/config/
~/.kde/share/config/session/

Same dirs on

~/.kde4

(we never know … just in case)

the problem though I think it is related to Plasma/KDE settings.
There are differences between accounts on the same machine.
Once I change for example the settings on konqueror to make Firefox the default browser once I click a html file firefox actually pop’s up and opens .
If I change that settings to konqueror … boom … once I click a .html file the infinite open new blank windows loop shows up.
Sometimes after a terminate command on konqueror I restart konqueror and it shows up with the warning of sudden terminations and asks to restart the last open windows … a bunch of empty windows with

konq:blank

.
On another user that I have changed the default File manager option from dolphin to konqueror once I click a Folder the exact same infinite loop of opening blank windows shows up.
On another user user that I did not change anything this does not happen at all and all folders can be opened as a regular operation inside konqueror.
I truly think this can be a potential mess on the setup of either konqueror or those the Plasma settings regarding choosing the default app for browsing and/or opening files.
Regards.

Looks like it. You seem to have pinned it down on Konqueror being the default file manager or not. That is very hard evidence I think. Time for a bug report?

I think that can be the case since this only happened after the upgrade to LEAP 15.4. And this is a machine that has the Same /home directory for all users on the system since at least OpenSuSE 11.something … yup that old.
About the bug report I need more time and further evidence on the system to investigate the root cause and confirmation on a virtual machine on a fresh install …

Another evidence is that on System Settings → Applications → File Associations there is a search input box that we can search for html. Once that is done two option dropdowns show up, -application and -text
I have changed that one to make the application tree dropdown and selec “x-extension-html” (.html) to have Konqueror as first option before all others that show up on the side panel.
Same for x-extension-xhtml (
.xhtml)
Once that is the case and I open from Dolphin a html file the same infinite loop of empty konqueror windows shows up again …
Once I remove Konqueror from the list of options to open such files on the application dropdown list … Dolphin opens the file with no problems in firefox.
To note that on the text dropdown option there is also a html entry and on that one I have left Konqueror and does not affect at least the opening html files from Dolphin.
So yup … this is on Systemsettings and something messed up for sure.

I use tumbleweed on my main computer but have 15.4 on a back-up computer. I have just tested konqueror on it and it seems to be working fine. I already had konqueror as the default http application and that works fine as well.

For my settings I have - webengine as the browser engine. It might be worth adding something like ‘old’ to the ‘konquerorrc’ setttings file in the ‘.config’ folder, this will then create a new set of konqueror settings.

I deleted all config files related to konqueror in every possible location to no avail.
Moreover, now when I try to open files from on my local filesytems (simple html file for documentation on my folders) on konqueror it does not open the file and starts Firefox ! with the file opened on some tab …
Webengine is selected as default.
I have simply gave up on Konqueror and am using Falkon instead with sadness since I have no time to figure out this problem and will have to come back to it at a latter time.
This can also be an issue with default KDE apps …
