Konqueror and memory use

I run openSUSE 12.3 KDE 32-bit as a VM using VirtualBox 4.2.8 on a Windows 7 64-bit host. The system runs fine except for the memory use of ca. 600 MB after booting the system. Fedora 18 KDE 32-bit uses only 290 MB. I suspect that Konqueror causes the high memory use. The ps axu output list no less than 85 processes of Konqueror with ca. 11 MB each although I haven’t started it. (I do run SpiderOak but that is listed separate - if this is of interest in this context.) Is there a simple fix to this (except removing Konqueror which I would prefer not to)?

I have 12.3 installed (rather than in a VM). This is 64 bit, though I do have a 32 bit installation that I can check later.

I actually have started konqueror, which I use for some pages, though I use firefox more.

I am showing konqueror as using 3.4% of memory, and firefox as using 5.9% of memory

ps uax | egrep 'konq|firefox'
rickert 2906 1.0 5.9 1187056 239392 ? Ssl Mar17 15:08 /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox
rickert 25073 0.4 3.4 2188252 139688 ? Sl 05:51 0:24 kdeinit4: konqueror [kdeinit] --silent
rickert 26783 0.0 0.0 5884 840 pts/2 S+ 07:15 0:00 egrep konq|firefox

I am not seeing 85 konqueror processes running.

I’m reporting this as a way of comparison. Presumably, we are using our systems differently.
