Knetworkmanger Issue

When I try to connect to a new network it keeps trying to use the name of the last network I connected to. This has just started happening in the last two months.

Tell us more about your setup. openSUSE version and is it 32 or 64 bit? We assume you are using KDE, is that version 4.4 or 4.5? Are you loading the KWallet application to keep your passwords? When you redo the network name, does it then connect? Do your show the normal Wireless icon in the icon tray when connected? Are you interested in deleted all KNetworkManager settings and KWallet settings and starting over. It helps sometimes, but can be a pain if you use KWallet for anything else.

Thank You,

Use the Plasmoid Networkmanager instead. Works much better in my experience.

If I were to guess,
Each Knetwork entry has a property (checkbox) to “Connect Automatically.” The “last network I connected to” probably has that box checked while your current network doesn’t have that box checked. If this is the case, check that box should solve your problem.

HTH,
Tony

I ran into that problem.

It turns out that the data saved includes the SSID for the network, and a user friendly name for the network. It is convenient to keep these the same.

When you create a new entry, it sticks with the old user friendly name, but changes the SSID. The way to avoid the problem is to make sure that you also change that user friendly name before you save the new data.

OS Spec:

  • Opensuse 11.3
  • 32 Bit
  • KDE 4.4.4
  • Using Kwallet
    System Spec
  • HP DV6
  • AMD Chipset
  • Atheros Chipset B/G/N

I just tested my network manager again by starting a new connection to a local network.

First try yields another Wep network complete with password

Second try a WPA2 network

I can replicate this error on three different systems, they have different hardware, but all run Opensuse 11.3 and kde 4.4.4. It happens at home and on the road, I can get around it, but I would like to fix the issue.

You’ll have to be more specific what your problem is.

When you initially power up in your location, you should automatically attempt to connect to the last network you were connected to because all of the available networks are “open” (or if security was enabled on one of them, that network if last connected).

So, your first attempt was to “marylou” - Are you suggesting that just because you see hidden characters for the passphrase you think that something is actually there? You can’t be sure unless you either click “reveal passphrase” or test the connection by attempting to actually connect.

Then, your second attempt to connect to “coco-7” - Are you suggesting that just because you see nothing that it also means something relative to your earlier WEP attempt?

Frankly, I haven’t personally investigated how OpenSuSE stores WEP passphrases (I will when I need to troubleshoot, I ordinarily have enough issues to fix regularly to not go looking for more) but WPA may be stored differently (I’m pretty sure the WPA passphrase hash is stored in the WPA supplicant config file, not kwallet) so that may be why what might seem similar to you (WEP and WPA configs) may actually be different.

In any case, IMO connecting to last successful connection is likely the normal behavior as you’ve described it so far (or you can clarify what you really expect).

Had that problem, too. Whenever I wanted to create a connection to a new wireless network, the settings for an existing network showed up and sometimes I accidentially overwrote them. My workaround was to press cancel and try again until an empty “New connection” window appeared.
As buckesfeld said, there’s a new plasmoid-networkmanagement which will replace KDE4-Networkmanager soon. It already looks good and works well, but I don’t know if it’s available for KDE4.4.

Instead of repeatedly pressing “cancel” I’d recommend you rt-click on the knetwork applet on the tray (typically rt end of taskbar), select either “Connect to Other Network” or “Manage Connections” – Typically you’ll see your desired network listed which can be selected immediately.

I’ve also often noticed that if you rt-click on the knetwork tray applet you might immediately see all networks which you have valid credentials, clicking on one of those should connect you immediately.

Thanks for your advice. But what do you think I did? And by the way. It was about a NEW connection, not a preexisting one. Regards and sorry for being rude.
