Kmail SMTP Configuration Problem

I built a new computer for my wife (openSUSE13.2; KDE and Kmail 4.14.3). I have done this several times before and never had any problems.

Everything went smoothly until i set up email in Kontact. The incoming pop configuration was routine and works. It receives email.

BUT …

The SMTP outgoing configuration does not work. Trying to send an email yields the following Error Notification:

Failed to transport message. Message sending failed since the following recipients were rejected by the server: xxx@xxxxx.xxx (The server responded: “Administrative prohibition”)

Since the server responded and mention of “Administrative prohibition” I thought the problem was probably with my hosting service (ipowerweb). They were very responsive and spent a lot of time trying to help. They say they cannot duplicate the error and have checked the mail server carefully. They think it is a local problem peculiar to my installation. They assure me that their servers did not generate the error message. They walked me through configuration step by step and I sent them screen shots of what I had. I can’t complain about their effort and attention but my outgoing mail still doesn’t work.

Those are the same openSUSE and KDE version as I am using on this computer. They work just fine here but not on the new computer.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have spent all the time I am willing to spend trying to resolve this problem. Since it is a new build, I am just going to start over. Hard experience has shown me that getting a clean trouble-free initial installation of everything avoids a lot of irritation later on.

All of my other computers were running openSUSE 13.1 and upgraded to 13.2. This one was a new install of 13.2 and had problems from the get-go. I plan to new install 13.1, set everything up and then upgrade to 13.2.

Maybe there were configuration changes in a new install 13.2 that I missed in the documentation. At any rate, I had no problems configuring 13.1 on other computers and those configurations carried over when I upgraded to 13.2.

I was too late to edit the previous message.

What I want to add is the openSUSE 13.1 installs KDE and Kmail 4.11.5.

The KDE/Kmail developers might want to take a look at what was changed between 4.11.5 and 4.14.3.

I had the same problem.
When you open a new message it automatically adds your name & email address in the “From” box.
Remove your name & the left & right arrows.
Just leave your email address there & try sending it like that.

Thank you for the reply. It is nice to know someone else has had the same vexing problem.

I have done as you suggested. The problem remains - I can receive pop3 mail but I cannot send SMTP mail.

This problem has been ongoing since I started building this computer 26 Nov, 2014. Trying to set up Kontact and Kmail was the first thing I did after installing openSUSE and going through the online updates. I have done this many times before with no problem. SMTP was working fine on the old computer the day before I got the new one. The new computer is built and configured for my wife except it will not send email via Kmail SMTP. She is unhappy and that means I am unhappy.

Here is what I have done:

  • Spent two days with the ipower support people - the error message led me to believe the mail server was rejecting all recipients. They assure me everything is ok on their end (the email is associated with my website domain and the mail servers are operated by ipowerweb, my web hosting service). I still think the problem may be with ipower because the SMTP connection on the old computer used SSL authentication and they tell me it now uses no encryption. That tells me they have changed something
on their SMTP server. - Reread the kmail manuals and reinstalled and reconfigured repeatedly, trying all variations I came across.
  • Deleted and reconfigured SMTP repeatedly using what Ipower support suggested and what worked last week and what still works on other computers connecting to the same mail servers (different email accounts).
  • In desperation, I thought maybe there had been changes in Kmail that I did not know about and reverted to the version that was working early last week. I did that by doing a new installation of openSUSE 13.1 as mentioned in previous posts her. SMTP still does not work.

I really need some help to get moving in the right direction. What configuration setting in openSUSE, Kontact or Kmail could I possibly be overlooking?

If past experience is any indication, the solution is so simple I will feel like a fool when it is pointed out to me.

If you have problems with kmail use thunderbird. Over the past few years Thunderbird has been much more stable then kmail.

Issue Resolved!!!

As I suspected, the solution was very simple and makes me feel stupid.

I had an error in the email address on the** Identity** page in Kmail configuration. It did not match the email address on the SMTP configuration page. The SMTP server rejects mail from someone other than the owner of the mailbox, as it should.

Maybe this will help someone else. If nothing else, it rescued me from five days of wandering around lost in the Kmail forest.
