Kmail import tool creates one directory per message

After a recent Thunderbird update overwrote much of my non-default configuration I decided to give Kmail another go. But the Kmail import tool has created one Kmail directory per message, so each message in Thunderbird folder “Whatever” is saved at (Whatever > cur > messageId > message).

Does anyone know how to fix this, or better still, how to stop it happening in the first place?

This problem has been reported before but apparently without any resolution, e.g. here in 2011 https://forums.opensuse.org/t/kmail-import-mails-from-thunderbird/74140 and here in 2020 https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php%3Ff=215&t=167960.html

The Thunderbird mail is stored in maildir format.

Just discovered a “manual” option in the Kmail import tool, and it contains this warning:

Note: Never choose a Folder which does not contain mbox-files (for example, a maildir): if you do, you will get many new folders.

Exactly…! Unless anyone can see a problem, I might try a straight copy of some of Thunderbird’s maildir-formatted folders to ~/.local/share/local-mail/ and see what Kmail does with it.
