KMail GMail IMAP Delete email with the DEL key

For those of you who use KMail and are using IMAP to access your GMail account I have a tip so that when you hit the DEL key the email message that you are trying to delete goes into the GMAIL/Trash folder instead of the local folder trash file. As anyone who has used IMAP with KMail and GMail together you have noticed that when you delete the file and it goes to the local trash folder it does not get purged from the all mail folder that is located in GMail thus it has not really been disposed of properly. To remedy this situation it is quite simple; although one needs to be cautious of doing this as you can screw up your system if you do not follow this procedure correctly.

  1. open the terminal and type the following and then hit enter.
akonadiserver
  1. Click the account that says GMail (yours may be named differently in which case it is the name you gave your gmail imap account while setting up kmail)

  2. At the bottom click “Configure” and then click “Configure Natively”

  1. A)Click the advanced tab; then B) click the folder icon next to where it says trash and then C) select the [GMAIL]/Trash folder.

  1. Go ahead and click “OK” in “select a collection” window and then click “OK” in the “* of type IMAP E-Mail Server” window.

  2. Close the Akonadi Console window.

  3. Open Kmail or Kontact and hit the delete key on your keyboard on a message you wish to discard and the message should relocate to the [Gmail]/Trash folder and your message will be properly disposed of.

Please forgive the mistake on the previous post. Step one should NOT be this

  1. open the terminal and type the following and then hit enter.
akonadiserver

but should be this

  1. open the terminal and type the following and then hit enter.
akonadiconsole

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.
