Naviagate to YaST > System > /etc/sysconfig Editor
You will see a panel with ‘+Applications…+ Other…+ System’. Click on the ‘+’ beside 'System ’ to expand the entries contained within this section.
Scroll down to ‘+Kernel’. Expand and click on ‘MODULES_LOADED_AT_BOOT’. Here you can add ‘raw1394’
When finished, click on ‘OK’.
Since then I have tried several things to get it going- working on possible errors.
You mentioned that the the ‘raw1394’ module does not get loaded at boot, or when a firewire device is connected, so I tried to disconnect the camera and try setting the module for automation again and reboot the system.
I tried entering the ‘raw1394’ with and without inverted commas raw1394
I tried kicking it over again manually with the modprobe command.
Sorry my replies are becoming confusing to you. I am trying hard to be as clear as possible as to what I am doing.

i strongly suggest you stop doing anything you are not told to do
(that is, stop “trying” things like disconnecting the camera,
rebooting and a “whole combination of different things” etc etc etc)…
you are not very likely to “get lucky” and just accidentally put
things together the right way…you are far more likely to keep
changing the situation at your end enough that Ken won’t be able to
help you…

Ken, do you agree?
Right now, I wish Ken was here helping too lol!
Cheers,
Dean

Without quotes is correct. Once you have done the /etc/sysconfig config, can you reboot, and let me know if the module is loaded with
lsmod |grep raw194
If we can at least establish that, we may have some other issue to deal with.
If the firewire module is loaded, but your camera is not handled correctly, we’d better take a look at
dmesg |tail
when camera has just been plugged in and turned on of course.
Will do Bruce. Thanks very much.
I saved the file (in my Home> Downloads folder),
opened the console,
*cd to the directory where you saved the file * (I dont understand this step?) Could you give me some directions on that please?
Thank you Bruce, yes i checked to see that the file was in the directory (etc/udev/rules.d/z95_firewire.rules) It was.
I went into software manager and I checked the 1394 libraries. I didn’t have all those installed. I checked the missing ones and installled. I had a few installed from the beginning that were not on your list.
Reboot.
No cigar.
Dam!
Well I’m not sure what the problems is. The udev line I gave you (will work just the same as the one Bruce linked to), and the ‘MODULES_LOADED_AT_BOOT’ entry work for me. However, I can’t test any further without the hardware. Maybe (speculation) your camera needs support via another kernel module. This Ubuntu thread hints at this:
The camera seems to recognize when it is hooked up to the computer.Just not the other way around.
I tried tapping those commands into terminal.
modprobe dv1394
modprobe video1394
modprobe raw1394
modprobe ohci1394
No change.
How do I activate those modules that may support the camera?
Thats what modprobe does, by loading them. You should also be able to see dmesg (kernel) output confirming the device node associated with the device. You might have to search for more info on your camera, kino, and firewire with sensible keywords.
Well, good news folks.
I shut down my machine last night saddened and disgusted with its behavior. I had absolutely given up. This morning I didn’t even want to attempt to connect the camera to Kino again in case it put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day. For some reason I did, and suddenly it came to life. The capture button was red and away we were away.
I want to thank deano and Bruce who who so kindly and patiently helped me with this. I do need a new HD camera but I have a stack of tape, including lots of family baby stuff that I really needed to preserve. The camera is not compatible with the TV’s in this region. It was all for a good cause. Really appreciated the help. Thank you.
I tried using Kino and Cinelerra to capture video from my Panasonic DV camcorder in my Ubuntu 8.04, but none of those softwares detected my camcorder. I tried both firewire and USB. Kino was giving me “WARNING: raw1394 kernel module not loaded or failure to read/write /dev/raw1394!” error. I couldn’t find out how to load raw1394 kernel module, so I tried changing the permission to 660 for /dev/raw1394. That didn’t help. I finally got it to work after I changed the permission to 777.
KINO: raw1394 kernel module not loaded or failure to read/write /dev/raw1394!
just an idea, try to do all the work with it you can before you
shutdown or turn off the camera again…
never know when “suddenly” it never works again…that is the problem
with “suddenly it works” (and you don’t know why or what you did
during one of those “trying a…whole combination of different things”
etc last session before you shutdown!
