I have tried to figure out what I am doing wrong by looking at KDEnlive help but it doesn’t seem to have the info I need.
I am trying to combine two .mp4 files into one longer file. I load the two clips and set them up but I see no way to render or save the combined clips. I want to export the combined clips as one .mp4 file. Additionally, I would like to edit out a few seconds of one of the clips to make a more pleasing transition. In the editing help page, I find no simple way to do this.
I guess this is too simple to be in the help pages. Any tips would be gratefully received.
I use Project>Add Clip to load the first clip and then drag it into into the relevant tracks - depending on how many tracks the clip has, you may have to adjust the number of tracks.
I then use Project>Add Clip to load the second clip, move to the end of clip with is already loaded into the tracks and drag the second clip into the tracks after the first clip.
To edit out anything, use the selection tool to mark the beginning and end of what you want to edit out; then right click on that section and select Delete. Leave the cursor in the empty section; right click again and select Remove Space.
Go to Project>Render to save the result.
I am trying to follow these steps but don’t see these menu options. I drag two sequences to the V1 line but cannot get a play of the two sequences as one long sequence. When I go to the File menu and select Render (the only way I can get to a Render) two errors show up in the Rendering pop up. Highlighting an error line, it says “Unsupported video codec: libx265”
Don’t know if any of this is related to the video problems related to kernel 7.01 affects this.
Just a quick suggestion … I’ve used Kdenlive for a very long time. I’m not confident that hoping for a “quick Kdenlive tutorial via forum posting here” is very effective.
#1 - there is a Kdenlive website. Probably get better responses there for tutorials.
#2 - There are numerous “how to” videos out on the web that are easily found. That’s how I “learned” to use it initially - just search.
#3 - In addition to “how to” videos, there are a number of tutorials that are readily available - just search.
From the menu “Media->Add Media->Add Clip or Folder”
Mark the two videos you want to combine->Ok
The two videos appear now in the upper left selection box.
Leftclick one video and drag and drop it to the lower Timeline window (as example to V1 and A1).
Now grab the horizontal scrollbar in the lower timeline window. Move the scrollbar to the right until you reach the end of the first video.
Now drag and drop the second video from the upper left selection box to the lower timeline window and place it at the end of video one.
Press “Render” and select a fileformat which is supported on your box (libx265 is appearently not supported as you are missing the codec). Press “Render to file” and wait for finish
All in all this description does not vary much from john_hudson’s description but might add some hints to get you up and running.
These are the steps that I had been following but nothing worked until I selected mpeg2 as the rendering format. That did allow me to render the combined clips. But I still have two issues.
First I checked myrlyn to add the problematic libx265 file. It was already installed as libx265-215. There is another version, not installed, labeled libx265-215-32bit. I did not install for fear of a conflict.
Next I want to remove a few seconds at the start of the second clip to make a better transition. I cannot do that. Finally, I cannot preview the combined clips before rendering. It seems both these things should be so simple but it isn’t working for me.
I started out on that KDEnlive website but could not figure out a solution to the issues I encountered. I will take your suggestion to review videos to see if watching is better than reading. More of a hands-on approach.
I wonder if there is a version issue. I have checked the various versions I have on different machines and the latest version I have (which came with Leap 16.0) is from November 2025. I know that there was a major upgrade in December 2025 and it is possible you have a newer version installed.
As you also mentioned video codecs, are you using Packman for your video codecs? Selecting H265 in my latest version of Kdelive does not generate any error messages.
I have lost the video for my monitor using hdmi. I pulled the RGB connection to my secondary monitor and plugged that in, so I can use my main monitor now.
I just checked Myrlyn and I use both Packman Essentials and regular Packman repos. Searching Myrlyn for H265 brings up no results. Furthermore, I searched for kernel-default to get a 6.19 kernel, which worked before. It is not available either.
So, at least, this appears to be an hdmi issue since the RGB input works; even if it is not real pretty. Of course I now have no audio but I will figure that out.
