I see that OpenOffice_org-kde - KDE Extensions for OpenOffice.org - requires
kdelibs3. Is there any prospect of getting this to use kdelibs4 instead?

Yes.
You need these kde3 libraries because OOo by default is using KDE3s file dialog. If you install it without these libraries OOo will crash when you open a file dialog. How to avoid this:
Open OOo > Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > General - here check the box Use OpenOffice.org dialogs.
