KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed OSS 11.4

OK, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve installed 11.4 and the problems have been building, but for the moment, I want to share the lightest problem which has been haunting me since day one. Whenever KAlarm or similar activates, I get the following message:

KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed.
Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?
This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed:
Capture: Conexant CX8801 (CX88 Digital)
Capture: Conexant CX8801 (CX88 Digital)
Capture: NVidia CK804 with ALC850 (NVidia CK804 - MIC ADC)
Capture: NVidia CK804 with ALC850 (NVidia CK804)
Capture: Yeti Stereo Microphone (USB Audio)
Capture: Yeti Stereo Microphone (USB Audio)
Output: NVidia CK804 with ALC850 (NVidia CK804 - IEC958)
Output: NVidia CK804 with ALC850 (NVidia CK804)
Output: Yeti Stereo Microphone (USB Audio)
Output: Yeti Stereo Microphone (USB Audio)

As far as I know, I’m using all the above hardware. Why would I want to permanently forget about these devices? I never had this problem in 11.3. Is it complaining because “phonon” says there is a “pulse audio sound server” in there? What’s the problem?

Here’s my config:

OS: Linux 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop x86_64
System: openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64)
KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6"

Like Zelator at this thread: http://forums.opensuse.org/forums/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/472611-bunch-problems-opensuse-11-4-a.html, I’m getting multiple miasms, but I thought I should deal with the problem that comes back most often first. It may be just a symptom of the hardcore problems I’ve experienced.

Thanks in advance.

So, I normally answer Yes, please remove these devices that are not working. It can happen when you update your kernel, it can happen should the device stop working after a reboot, but if the device just works later OK after the requested removal, it does not really matter and could be considered a bug in KDE 4.x. You could switch to openSUSE 12.1 to see if it helps or you could add in the alsa repository, update to the latest and update the kernel to the latest stable, but in the end, if sound continues to work, its just a nuisance thing. You could tell us a lot more about your hardware and in particular about your sound setup if you like. I might suggest you download and boot from a openSUSE 12.1 LiveCD and see if your sound works OK from there and consider if it does a good sign to upgrade or do a clean install.

Thank You,

Because typically one is asked this question, when one has done something to cause those devices to be duplicated, ergo one is having only the duplicate instance removed.

How do I find evidence of duplication?

In your KDE multimedia settings.
