KDE 4.6.3 and Oxygen

Hi,

today I installed KDE 4.6.3. (OpenSuse 11.4). With this version a modified oxygen icon set was installed. Some icons, e.g. folders, are looking very ugly. They are looking a little bit like Tango icons. This mixture of original oxygen icons and the “tango-oxgygen” ones looks very inconsistent.
You can repair this by installing the KDE 4.6.0 oxygen icon set (oxygen-icon-theme, oxygen-icon-theme-scalable) coming with OpenSuse 11.4… Yast is showing some problems regarding KDE 4.6.3. you can ignore them.

I totally agree. New icon set is not only awful but also doesn’t fit into KDE4 environment, whatsoever. I don’t understand why this change has been made as minor KDE updates should just fix some issues, not add stuff people might not want (as they obviously don’t want, just search other forums). Again, the new icon set indeed looks like some GNOME Tango-like theme.

That’s what I call a nice Oxygen stuff (too bad they can’t be downloaded, can they?)

I am sure many users would welcome if some RPM maintainer used this or the original icon set and uploaded it to SUSE repository.

I agree they ones on the above link are better. Please post
if there is a way to downlaod them.

openSUSE 11.4 MS1 (2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop)|Platform Version
4.6.3 (4.6.3) “release 4”|Intel core2duo 2.5 MHZ,|8GB DDR3|
GeForce 8400GS (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-270.41.06)

I have not found them yet for download. One might need to contact the team, who knows. For now, I got the original pack:

Here (~ 23 MB) and big pack (KDE 4.6) here (288 MB). Additionally, Crystal theme looks very neat too. There we go. Still… don’t understand how can somebody think that the latest KDE Oxygen Icons do fit into KDE. Dude!

Speaking of icons, I’ve been trying to put the new flat icons for Chromium/Chrome in my panel but KDE won’t save them. Even though it shows the flat icon in the menu, when I add it to the panel I get the old style icon.

Has anyone else had any success with the new icons? (11.4 with KDE 4.6.3)

Could you show me a screenshot of these new icons?
Because i have also KDE 4.6.3 installed and my folder icons looks just like
they did in 2009. (i had a screenshot of dolphin so i could compare)

If there was a change, i didn’t notice anything.
I’ve got KDE 4.6.3 from the release repo for 11.4

May sound surprising but I’ve noticed that Google Chrome icon’s look depends on used KDE icon style. When I used Win7 theme Chrome icon was flat, and after the theme was changed back to default Chrome was 3D again. Maybe there is something about cache or whatever. I like older icon better, anyway. But there is always a solution: change it manually via a right click, uhm?

That’s my point. No matter what I do I can’t get the flat icons to appear in the panel.

My guess is that it’s kept by tmp. Just don’t try to clean tmp by hand (causes problems). Do it like that:

Yast2 -> /etc/sysconfig -> Cron -> Clear tmp dirs at boot -> Yes

If you want to keep tmp afterwards, change it again to No after boot. This should do the trick.

BTW, I’ve installed the package from above (+200 MB) and now openSUSE looks like it used to. Works great.

@Maaskant: If there was a change, i didn’t notice anything.

Look at this:

I changed my theme, and then back to oxygen again and now i have those icons
too :s
But i can’t say that i don’t like the look of it, it’s allright by me.

Very useful, thanks. Somehow I didn’t find those icon sets. After Googling, I installed the oxygencolors iconset developed by BluPenguin. v. 3.5 oxygencolors KDE-Look.org and I’m very happy with them.

The icons that came with 4.6.3 wrecked the 4 desktops I had prettied up with such care.

The 4.6.3 Oxygen icon set is vomit. It is a terrible mix.

I’ve downgraded to 4.6.0

I want a fix for the next version.

I totally agree. The icons look just UGLY. I’ve recently installed openSUSE 12.1 with KDE 4.7.2 and … ****! Again those UGLY icons. What was the motivation of doing this? I cannot understand. I’ve downloaded the packages for KDE 4.6.0 and now my KDE environment looks simply beautiful. But it shouldn’t be like that. If you’re proposing KDE as the default environment during the installations then please do not demolish the user experience for many new users who are using the system for the first time. They will just look at the icons will hate them and will switch to Kubuntu with the normal KDE user experience …
