I've Borked Plasma 5.5

I’ve been using openSUSE for just a few days and have been trying to get Plasma to work properly. I’m running dual Asus Nvidia 770 GTXs.

When I first installed LEAP, I chose the Plasma desktop and things were buggy from the start. I couldn’t do anything in Plasma without having it crash on me. So, I re-installed and chose the Xfce desktop, which works fine.

I then installed Nvidia drivers using Yast and re-booted. Still had problems. I then read in a forum post that disabling Xinerama appeared to resolve the issues. I disabled Xinerama and I was able to get to the desktop and manage to spend more than 30 seconds without a crash. In fact, I think if I’d have stuck with it, I’d still be in there. However, I don’t like not being able to access my second monitor.

I also discovered that the issue is being dealt with in Plasma 5.5. So, I enabled the repository for the new version and updated all the related Plasma files to 5.5.

However after doing so, when I tried logging into Plasma, all I got was wallpaper and a mouse pointer, which I could move around. Nothing else would display though.

I’d eventually like to get Plasma working. Anyone have any ideas on how to proceed?

You probably have a mixture of packages in different versions installed.
Do a full switch to the KDE:Frameworks5 repo, as shown here:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Vendor_change_update#Full_repository_Vendor_change

If you need further help with that, please post your repo list:

zypper lr -d

Thanks for the response! I followed the instructions for switching to the repo and you were right. There were lots of files that updated. However, I rebooted, and tried logging in again but with the same result. I get wallpaper and a mouse cursor but nothing else, no error messages. I’m able to log back out and revert to the Xfce DE.

Here are my repositories:

Does it work if you run startkde inside an IceWM session (or similar), or do you get some error message then?

Does it work on a fresh user account?

The packages from the KDE:Frameworks5 repo work fine here, but I’m on 13.2…

I just tried “stardkde” from inside IceWM and got the same result. I got the following response from the terminal:

I’ll also try creating a new user and logging into that account.

Okay, I also tried creating a new user and logging in as them. This resulted in the same thing, though this time I didn’t even have wallpaper. Just black screens and a mouse cursor.

Don’t really see a problem there, except for this:

kdeinit5: PID 2476 terminated.

Doesn’t tell much though, and I’m not sure it is really the cause.

Can you post the full output please?
(run “startkde > filename” to redirect the output to some file)

And/or try to run plasmashell directly.

One possible reason for your problems would be that the nvidia driver is not really working though.
So please also post /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or the output of “glxinfo|grep render” (you might have to install Mesa-demo-x first).

Can you post the full output please?
(run “startkde > filename” to redirect the output to some file)

Okay, ran kde from the terminal and here is the output:

Here is the output of glxinfo|grep render:

Looks ok.

No idea then any more, sorry, maybe you should just switch back to Plasma 5.4.3…

One thing though:
you did mention Xinerama, that means you use multiple monitors, right?

There are problems regarding this in current Qt5, an update to 5.5.1 is on the way for Leap 42.1, maybe that would improve the situation…

Ok, this might be the problem then:

kerry@linux-yisi:~> startkde > report
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
...
kscreen: Failed to request backend: unknown error
...
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".

Not sure what can be done about this though.

Or this:

Try to remove ClamAV (I suppose that’s cav?).

Try to remove some of those things, i.e. tracker, parcellite, blueberry-tray, deja-dup-monitor.

Okay, removed all of those and still no joy. Perhaps my best bet is to simply re-install using the Xfce DE, add the Plasma 5.5 repositories, upgrade to Plasma 5.5, then give it a try.

Or, perhaps re-install using Plasma, leave Xinerama off, add the Plasma 5.5 repository, reboot and turn on Xinerama to see if it works.

Okay, so I re-installed using the Xfce DE, then I updated, then installed Nvidia drivers, then loaded Plasma 5.4, then added the Plasma 5.5 repository, and updated to the new repository versions. I then logged into a Plasma session without any problems.

I re-set Nvidia drivers to reflect my configuration and enabled Xinerama and rebooted. When I tried to get back into Plasma, the same thing as before happened. I ended up with a black screen and a mouse pointer, nothing else.

I can’t switch back to Plasma 5.4 because that didn’t work either with my dual monitors.

I’ll look into Qt 5.5.1 then.
